It is a very real concern. I have never had one injured to the point of being culled or anything like that from a leg band, thank God. We would most certainly humanely cull a chick before we would keep one that is one-legged though. Chickens literally spend nearly their entire lives on their feet, so keeping a one-legged chick alive would be so very cruel in my opinion. But I digress. Yes, putting leg bands on chicks can be risky if you do not monitor them closely and are not so very careful.

Also going to have some Cap and Gown pics done since I didn't go to my Commencement.I’ve been trying to be good too but black walnut divinity is my biggest weakness. My mom and I are the only ones that like black walnuts so we only made a single batch of it thank goodness.@Kung_pao your Divinity looks amazing btw! I have had the hardest time avoiding sweets during the holidays, but I haven't indulged too much.
Yes I like the Zip wing bands. I buy them on Amazon now, but you can also find them on Ebay and other online stores.

I have chickens with blue, some with green, some red. My most current boxes are pale pink and those are pretty. But the wing band will be concealed by feathers once the birds matures and you won't even see it on the bird except for maybe the tip on tighter feathered breeds like Leghorns or Games. So no the color does not matter. It won't bother the bird at all whether darker or lighter in terms of heat because it will be under feathers. Some breeders use a different color for every breeding year and I think that would be helpful. I just pick the color I'm feeling at the time. Everything is recorded in a big binder on a log sheet I made on Word.
