The Moonshiner's Leghorns

There are a lot of breeders out there that go through tons of chicks before they get to where they're going and where they want to be.... but eventually they lock in on a few varieties and then they specialize.
That's why I wanted to ask.
What is your end game?
Hopefully it includes Mille Fleurs...
My end game is to not have an end game.
I want to push the envelope of what I can create for as long as I can.

Would anyone else like to mention the amount of feed you go through in a month?

I probably go through 400-500 lbs. every 2-3 weeks. I have less than 100 birds, but I do have waterfowl and turkeys. Honestly the English Orpingtons don't eat that much especially when you figure in the opossums that enjoy helping themselves to the feed. I can't wait to build the new breed pens and not have to deal with it anymore.

Why do you keep so many breeders?

I imagine it's the amount of colors that he has forces the amount of breeders up. Personally I want about 10-12 birds of each color/variety that I'm working on.

Okay so what you're saying is you going to continuously push the envelope on your Mille Fleurs as well, correct ?
Would you mind sharing your progress, professor? In the name of science?...
Please present your evidence, the world wants to know. You owe it to science.

It is a balancing act between having enough to move forward and not having too many to feed.
10-12 of a group is where id like to be also. That makes things so much easier and less stressful then only having pairs to quads.
I always worry about projects where I only have one of either sex. Of course that usually means a rooster. Ive had projects get set back a generation or two from losing a rooster.
When I started my blue projects I also started a chocolate project. I used a chocolate Orpington and got three or four generations in. To the point I was almost happy with the type being back to where I needed it. I ended up losing a couple birds which resulted in losing the complete project.
It was terrible.
Now with some projects I also keep a couple birds from the prior generation just for emergency replacements if I have that happen again.

It's rather genius actually... it's a marketing strategy that dates back to early market practice... It's called if I recall;
Fear Of Missing Out...
It's psychological.. where there's intrigue, hype, and if the source holds out long enough, it will activate a surge of the need to have one too. Where normally someone would pass or casually take a look at something , when this takes hold they will actually make an effort and go out of their way to have it and get it.
Why are there always tent lines for the next IPhone?

BOOM.....
