Your rooster only has one copy of barring.Yes the black pullet is from cuckoos
Thank you! You are a legend. I suck at trying to follow genetics and this is plain EnglishYour rooster only has one copy of barring.
Barring is sex linked. Females only have one gene. either barred or non barred so if she has the gene she's barred if she doesn't she isnt.
females get that gene from their fathers and pass it to their sons. Every male chick she produces will be barred.
The males have two genes and get one from each parent and pass one to each offspring.
Your rooster has one barred gene and one non barred gene so he can pass either forward. Since females get just a gene from the father. About half of his female offspring will be cuckoo and about half will be black.
The male offspring will all get one gene from the mom and if they get the non barred from the father they'll be darker and breed just like their dad.
If they get the barring gene from their father they'll have two copies and be lighter as the one is.
Keep the light one and he is pure for cuckoo. Breed him to cuckoo hens and all females will be cuckoo and all males will be double gene cuckoo. They will breed true.
Keep your black females and when bred to light cockerel all females will be cuckoo. The males will be single barred so you can discard the dark males or what have you.
You won't be if you throw all the Leggys awayI'm kind of a big deal.
