The Moonshiner's Leghorns

Can you explain what Dun is? I mean appearance, where it comes from, and what's it's effect on offspring color. I've seen threads where it appears white, khaki, or mauve. I'm so confused.
I bred chocolate Orps for a while, great lines. My girls were aging out so I bought some replacement girls from another line. The new line matched up perfectly with mine, type, color etc. Well to make a long story short....all hell broke loose. I have white(females only) with the same eye and shank color as my chocolate. The males looked chocolate but had a few splashes of white here and there. They're beautiful and in my general flock because I don't have a clue what they are. I had to revamp my whole breeding program.

I clearly didn't think that part through. Some are gonna be difficult so I'll test breed when needed.
For my d'Anvers I just don't breed from blue quail cockerels, then I don't have to deal with splash quail, since they're not recognized. It might be a waste of a cockerel, but oh well.
