The Moonshiner's Leghorns

Now back to when Kiki explained mottling to me and I said that that sounded like it would be a pain in the @$$ later.
Since mottling is recessive the 4 varieties that aren't mottled can be carrying the gene. I'd have to test breed those birds to make sure I only keep the ones that don't carry mottling.
To do that you breed them to a mottled bird and see what they produce. You have to hatch more then a couple to play the odds enough to make sure but if you hatch any mottled chicks then they carry it. If you don't hatch any mottled chicks then they don't.
When my F2s were mature I'd need to make some crosses to get the golden males to gold and the SF barred males to DF barred males.
I'd go ahead and do my test breeding at this point and weed out the mottled carries then use non carries for the varieties that I don't need mottling to do my final crosses.

Silver duckwing SF barred split mottled
Golden duckwing SF barred split mottled

Blue would be keepers

Then I'd need to cross the golden males to their matching gold females to get about 50/50 gold and golden offspring. Of course keeping the gold and disregarding the goldens.
Also same for SF barred males. Breed those to matching barred females and produce about 50/50 of SF and DF barred males. Disregard the SF barred.
Now I'd be at my 8 varieties.

So what you're saying is that mottling is recessive so they need two copies to be expressed?
So that would mean a copy from each parent but since these will only get one copy from the hen that the offspring will carry or be split for mottling but it will be sight unseen?
That sounds like its gonna be a pain in my @$$ later on.

I think that's what I'm saying.
I don't know but that sounds good to me.

I'm taking notes.

So my F1 offspring will be.....
Pullets... Silver duckwing carrying mottling.
Cockerels...silver/gold duckwing single factored barred carrying mottling.
Right?

This split business is confusing me.
This means they carry it but don't show it?

My battery is about dead be back in a bit.
Now we know what the F1s are and what genes will be in play so what will I get from crossing them.
I start with the easy one.
Both are wild type (duckwing) so all offspring will be duckwing.
Now for gold/silver, barring, and mottling.
Ok Kiki get us started.

Aw, I was asleep.

I'm not awake enough just yet to follow that
Give me a few hours. I'm going to have to read everything a few times.

I'm thinking that since they both will be carrying this mottling business that it's going to be seen in the second batch of kids but which sex?
