Is there a reason for the piping? I've been trying to figure it out

But wouldn't they still reach in with just holes? Not judging, honestly just confused a bit. I'm more than likely just not having something click for me

So they don't cut their throats when eating (jagged, rough edges) and so the feed isn't right against the walls of the holes and spilling out.

Cause it's prettier then just a hole.
It works best with some sort of lip inside or they pull the food up the wall and out the hole.
