The Moonshiner's Leghorns

How big a fan are you of crele?
I really don't like bringing in a different breed but if that's the only way you kind of half to.
Definitely helps if the breed isn't too far from a Leghorn which Legbars aren't so I wouldn't be scared to. Just myself but I'd have to eliminate those crests ASAP. 🤣
Legbars are like half a Leghorn, at least in my opinion, that's close enough to cross to. XD

Ya if you're worried about top line and tail set I'd go with the white. Only down side is having the recessive white gene that's gonna hide.
Once I get some decent quality Leghorns from the project, I can test mate them for recessive white and only use birds without it. It may be a little bit more annoying to eliminate, but not too bad.

What do black-tailed reds look like as chicks? My Red x Brown chicks look pretty heavy on the duckwing. And their wing feathers are coming in brown like brown leghorns so far, no red looking feathers.

I've got to see what I have still before I can make plans. Year before last I thinned way down then without hatching many last year and thinning down even more I'm low on about everything.
Actually worried if I can get back on top of some.
I know I should try to get back to numbers on buff, exchequer & blue exchequer, barred & blue barred, silver crele & blue silver crele, lavender silver duckwing, I'm down to one crele so need to look at doing something there for crele and blue crele, so ya 50 ideas and no idea which I can accomplish or afford to feed.
Afraid the next couple years are gonna be feast or fathom.
This is my biggest problem. I always have to keep too many irons in the fire, but for some reason that is what it takes to keep my crazy brain happy. Like I know I should be doing homework now, but instead I am procrastinating and planning out chicken projects. I have undiagnosed ADHD and it is just how my brain operates.

If I had the ability to create all of those varieties you just mentioned, I wouldn't be able to stop myself until we were overrun and broke. This is why my husband has to be the voice of reason and tell me "no" when I want all these hatching eggs from exhibition Leghorn lines, and what about this trio or that trio? And can we get peacocks? What about a mini horse? He keeps my impulsivity in check. Otherwise, we wouldn't be able to afford to feed ourselves. lol

Mine where red but you could see some stripes.
Years ago I crossed buff with browns. The hens matured looking like browns but about 1/3 of the bird starting from the front was buff.
Sorta like how black sex links hens get color on the front. They were some of the prettiest birds I've had.

It has to be close enough. My husband has capped me on buying any more chickens. I have to work with what I have. But where there's a will there's a way. My biggest flaw is always thinking "oh I can make that." That's what happened when I taught myself how to quilt. Now here I am, smack dab in the middle of my practicum for school, creating Leghorns from near scratch.

What do you mean by brown exactly? Even my Buckeye chicks don't start with red wing feathers. But they aren't duckwing either

You're preaching to the choir. Only difference is I have no voice of reason around.
