The Moonshiner's Leghorns

Here is a diagram I found on an old OEGB post that includes Silver Gingers and other varieties that use "Black Breasted Red" as the base color, which I believe is just an OEGB term for Gold Duckwing (aka wild type, e+/e+).

Behold! :woot

I agree, all chickens prefer to free range but some are better built for it than others. Marans are a very robust breed and do quite well free ranging. They were also our most resistant birds to coccidiosis, which I found to be amazing. I never lost any chicks to coccidiosis or illness.

I am doing well! I changed my username a bit ago, my previous one was kfelton0002. I miss the Marans thread and chatting with you and our friend RedBanks. I hope your birds are doing well in Oz and I hope you are well also! My husband and I have changed gears and now want to focus on Leghorns, since they are his favorite breed, second only to his Games. They tend to do well both in pens/coops as well as free ranging and don't eat as much as the heavier breeds. That helps offset the amount of feed the turkeys eat. lol
nice to know you are doing well and working with some thing you and husband like ,Leghorn are very solid breed ,easy going too, good luck with them ,
@The Moonshiner is doing the greattest job with them ,love his dedication and hard work ,we need more peoples like him in this world , Bravo .

Good to hear from you. Good to hear about your birds.
I'm still at it but the last two years have been tough. Two years ago I had to thin down quite a bit. Even more last year and I hatched about 25% of what I used to.
Pretty low of varieties and numbers compared to before so need figure out plans for this season.
Hatching season is just getting underway here in the states so....
my friend some time we up with number of chooks we can hatch other time we down , it is the way of working with chooks I guess ,
my number are up for sure ,
Love your work ,Blessing
good luck with your breeding season .

very easy to cul anfd go buy new ,it is harder to breed what you want true but it possable ,The Moonshine know that very well .

I was thinking about this today. It is easy to go out and buy stock from a show-quality line of birds, and work on them from that stock. There is no challenge to it because the work has already been done. It is easier and quicker that way, and if I wanted birds to exhibit now, that is what I would certainly do. But putting the work in on a line, working to correct flaws over generations, and turning it into something special is an achievement. It is frustrating at times, but it is gratifying to watch a line slowly improve over generations.

I can't agree with this enough! You taught us in the Marans thread about balance in the breeding pen and I will never forget that. It has proven true many, many times in the progeny I have hatched. I loved your view about not throwing out a line because of its faults, but instead to breed what you have and try to work with the best of the birds you have. I use that wisdom to this day when selecting birds for breeding, and mating a complimenting bird to another as balance to improve faults. When you would critique a bird, you would not only mention its faults, but you would also mention its good qualities, and I keep that mentality to this day. "What good does this bird have to offer?" versus "nope, it has this fault or that fault, throw it out!"

You are a wise man Joe, and an excellent breeder. Many compliments and much gratitude, sir.
I m presed you picked up a lot of my madness in breeding chooks or any animal ,
that what I have done and now I got the largest and the healthiest and most gorgeous marans chooks in Oz .
thank you for the kind worl ,Blessing to you and your husband ,

Thank you! I look forward to working with Leghorns. I hope you can share your breeding knowledge here on this thread. The genetics for color is the same regardless of breed. We would very much enjoy talking chickens with you! :D

And agreed, @The Moonshiner 's work with Leghorns and all of the varieties he has created is very inspiring. He has done well with them for sure. 💯
