The Moonshiner's Leghorns

Got to leave work a little early due to low census and a few more chicks are hatched. Another Silver Ginger (this one has a full wheaten base), and a Brown Leghorn in one group, and a Brown Leghorn from another group with more eggs pipped. There are chicks in the mesh bags but I cant tell how many.

And 3 Legbar x Brown Leghorn eggs have hatched in the NR 360. The other 3 eggs in there are pipped. It is 0423 here so the house is dark and they are sleeping. 😴 🥹

One thing I have noticed about the Legbar x Leghorn chicks from the first group is that only maybe 1 or 2 out of the 5 look to be heterozygous for crest. The others look non-crested. If that is the case, the sire is only heterozygous for crest which makes perfect sense. He has a very straight comb and minimal crest for a Legbar which is what I prefer in the males. I hate twisted combs on the males, and if selecting for straighter combs sacrifices a bigger crest, then so be it.

Selecting for a straighter non-twisted comb in Legbars likely means they are heterozygotes for crest and have smaller crests. Homozygotes with bigger crests have twisted combs because the bigger crest pushes the comb forward causing it to be twisted since there is only limited space on the skull for crest vs comb. That is why Polish chickens were bred to have the tiny wierd looking forked combs they have. To encourage a larger crest and a nicer comb vs crest aesthetic.

This is good news as I can use only the non-crested F1 birds I hatch to breed forward in the Crele Leghorn project. They won’t have the “ugly crests” that @The Moonshiner hates so much. 😆

Isn't there a line of blue laying brown leghorns out there somewhere? I think I remember some one on the fourm useing to try and create blue laying gold laced or silver laced wyndots.

Had a great hatch, only 3 Game eggs didn’t hatch out of everything in lockdown.

Final hatch count:
6/6 Brown Leghorns hatched
6/6 Legbar x Leghorn hatched
2 Silver Ginger Games
1 Albany (duckwing colored) Game

:wee

However, one of the Brown Leghorn chicks has pretty bad crooked toes and may have to be culled. 😢

Yes I believe I have read about a blue egg laying line of Brown Leghorns. They likely had Legbar influence I am assuming. @The Moonshiner ?

I took a few pictures when I wing banded the first set of Legbar x Leghorn chicks. I documented whether or not they had a crest. Even hetero mixed Legbar chicks display a small crest as chicks. Only 2 out of 5 show a tiny crest out of these. I would say my suspicion is accurate that the sire is only hetero for crest. Here are pics of one chick with a crest and and one without.

Looks like he just parted his hair on the wrong side.
