Ya I'm good with bulbs and have always used them. Just thinking I could maybe give one a chance for the experience sake.
I would only use it in my bedroom brooder so chicks from hatch to 7 days old. I would think I'd not have to adjust the height. They'd have light from the light coming in the windows and my light but I wouldn't have to worry about their light on all night like has been the case.
My room is my room so it's not cold enough to need a lot of heat I'd assume. I honestly have no clue how much they raise the heat so.....

The ones I used needed it to be at least 55F to begin working. They never felt as warm as a mama hen does though, but once the chicks were ambulatory, they seemed to do okay as long as they didn't get chilled from being wet or getting out and losy

Yeah a light in my bedroom would be a deal breaker. I have to have it pitch dark and quiet to sleep. We brood newborns for a few days in my sons room them boot them out to the building.

I reckon a light is better for the first 10 days.

I have 3 heat plates, I find they are better for when the chick is older and the more chicks you have in there at a time the less the need for accurate adjustment in height as they keep each other warm

If it's in a room should be no issues. I do heat plates from day one of my hatches. I use clear totes as well for ambient light when I have lights on in the room. Plates are warm enough for an indoor brooder. Even when my house was at 56 it worked fine. No draft issues indoors helps. The producer's pride gets as hot as a hen, I keep an eye on the because of that. Just incase of it being to hot.

Funny story about the heat plate getting hot. I call mine the iron hen and boy does she get hot. So hot that it scorched the little tiny crests growing in on some of my white legbar chick one year. They were fine though. My husband hates that thing.

I don’t have birds anymore but I have never once used a heating lamp LOL I actually had bought the bulb with my first batch of chicks and then read about Mama Heating Pad (Blooies thread) and did that instead lol for the first few batches I used the heating pad and then I found the heating plate and switched over to that. It works fantastic. I used on both chicks I hatched and chicks I had shipped to me. They all thrived lol I even used it on little itty bitty quail a few times!
