The Moonshiner's Leghorns

Been a busy few days and yes it's still hot and dry here for now.
Saturday and Sunday no one was around at work so I did some extra and also may have worked a little slower. Put in 10+ hours both days so glad to be past that and will be happy on payday. Also spent a few days playing middleman to help my mom get some junk vehicles of my brothers off her property before she got fined. Rednecks and broken down vehicles. SMH, that's why you move to the country not in city limits.
Yesterday got some stuff accomplished including putting away 1200 lbs of feed. Love the gorilla cart but still a chore in the heat.
Put eggs from my hatch a long into lockdown. Hoping that isn't gonna be a miserable hatch but odds are.....
Thinking for now I'll get another breaker 6 or 8 outlet deal and use my first shorter overkill extension cord to set up about 6 incubators in my room for hatching. Need to get these hatch rates turned around but if not slow and steady is better then giving up.

Ya, good thing I got that electricity ran to the chick house for lights. Got it done just in time to coincide with my bad hatches and it being hot enough that I don't really need lights.
Oh well, maybe that will be the excuse I need to hatch into the fall.
I look forward to hatching in the fall. It will be cool enough to actually be able to stand being in the brooder building without having a heat stroke then. As long as the fall hatch chicks are pretty well feathered by January they should be good to go over the coldest parts of winter.

We butchered a tom turkey and one of the older yard roosters yesterday. I also scoped out how many older brood roosters I have that can be butchered to make room for all of the up-and-coming breeders. We are going to put some of the roosters on tie-cords so they can eat some grass and give the hens a break from their incessant pursuits. The gamecocks can't be put into bachelor groups for obvious reasons, so tie cords work well to keep them separated. They enjoy the grass and the brood hens enjoy not being harassed, so win-win.

Lots of butchering to be done this weekend and next week while I am off work for PTO.

Sketched a Leghorn rooster this evening. Debating adding color to it. Maybe Brown Leghorn as the variety? 🤔

Hatching a few is better than none. Just protect the ones you do hatch really well. If your hens cooperate and don't all start molting soon, hopefully you can hatch quite a few more before they quit laying for the molt.

Hey everyone, I was wondering if my brown leghorn is too early to sex or not? I'm thinking male. Tidbitting, warning calls constantly, 2x the size of the girls from day 1. (Darker brown one in the pics.)

It is a pullet. It is developing salmon colored breast feathers. Brown Leghorns are sexually dimorphic, meaning the males and females are two different colors. A young male would be developing black breast feathers, while females develop salmon colored breast feathers. Both males and females will tidbit, it is not gender specific.

And here is a pullet with a salmon colored breast. You can see the salmon colored breast feathers at the base of her hackles on her upper chest.
