I have noticed that my Buff Leghorns do not act like typical Leghorns. They are very calm and docile, and not flighty. So whatever breed was used to outcross to bring in those genes (eWh, Co, Di, Mh, Db) (Minorcas?) must have been a docile one. That and I’m sure breeder selection has accounted for it.Hey! I care about the personality too!
Well I don't hatch eggs until my birds have matured fully and have come into their beauty, which happens after the point of lay.Well I can’t hatch eggs without eggs, so laying is of prime importance.![]()
If they are laying anyway there is no harm in hatching pullet eggs once they are decent size, especially when you only have a small pool of birds to work with anyway as is my situation for now. I have hatched from pullet eggs before and the offspring are fine. Hatching pullet eggs isn’t ideal but neither is prolonging projects until all of my birds are 1+ year old. I can be picky when I have more birds to choose from. lol And my birds aren’t going to be shown so wear and tear to feathers from breeding isn’t an issue.Well I don't hatch eggs until my birds have matured fully and have come into their beauty, which happens after the point of lay.
Little early still but I'm leaning 2 males and 1 female on my next 3 buffs.I have noticed that my Buff Leghorns do not act like typical Leghorns. They are very calm and docile, and not flighty. My Silvers are probably the most spastic I have right now. The Whites are even more docile and non-flighty than them.
Oh and speaking of the Whites, one of my husband’s White Leghorn pullets is actually a cockerel. I think my husband is calling him Foghorn. lol
@The Moonshiner it most certainly is the year of the rooster!

Bugger!Bummed out day today. My MaticoopX alarm started going off today. Never heard it before, didn't even know it had one.
Temp was 97° and dropping slowly. Kept dropping so unplugged it for a few and then reset. Won't maintain temp. Maybe heating element went out.
But ya for now it's done for.![]()
