OK, I'm in serious need of some advice. The nicest of the girls that I got from Sand Hill last year decided to go broody. I have more eggs than I can use and decided to let her have at it, figuring the mood would pass in a day or so. Nope. It's been nearly a week, and she has accumulated every egg in that coop. She has so many that it is physically impossible for her to keep them all underneath her, and she has a circle of eggs around her and is starting on a second outside ring.
I live in Arizona, it's summer, and there is a metal roof over the top of the nest boxes. It's under a peach tree for shade, but life is still on the warm side. Now--what do I do? I'm thinking that if she can't handle all of them some eggs are going to go bad and smell, and I don't want to just let any developing eggs die. They may not all fit in an incubator--she has a serious stash.
Two of the eggs are green. I had a singleton hatch last year and had to search for siblings. The five chicks already in the brooder were hatched with eggs from this coop.
There are eggs from the 5 year old hen that I got at the show in 2020 in the incubator, and I really want at least one chick from her. She is not laying much at all any more.
The broody girl has made it quite clear that her two main goals in life are motherhood and causing my demise.
Thoughts?
