The Moonshiner's Leghorns

Chicken working day here. Day started out crappy. First thing I went and paid property taxes. Goodbye Christmas bonus plus too much more. You were fun why you lasted.
After that it warmed up to above freezing and now not bad at all. Went through and knocked ice out of all the water tubs then rinsed them and refilled. Kind of pita since too cold for hose and I'm bucketing water. Cleaned the two big brooders and one grow out pen that's concrete floor. Added chips to them then straw to almost everyone else. OK maybe not almost everyone but over half. Feed everyone but one last pen. Taking a break from putting feed up. One more wagon load then feed and put straw in that one pen then calling it a day for chickening. Other stuff to do today.

I got my chicken chores done for the day already. They are predicting rain later on in areas tonight, plus I'll have to comfort Serene once the fireworks start up. She hasn't figured out that she's safe from the noise while being in the house with us. Last year I ended up crating her until they were done.

Its probably more likely that the pullets have become sexually mature and are instinctually receptive to mating to fertilize their eggs. They squat and the rooster responds by mounting them. However I have seen roosters run down hens who weren’t actively laying so they will try to mount hens regardless of no presence of cues or squatting from the hen.
I’ve definitely seen that too. I think it depends on the rooster. My first rooster, a bantam Cochin was crazy with hormones. He was awful to his pullets. So I let my older hens school him. Hes awesome now, and has been the best roo. My other roosters aren’t aggressive with their ladies. They wait for the squat or the green light. And within a week they’ll be laying. Chicken world is intricate apparently.

lol that was an illusion of a Christmas bonus. What a coincidence I had the same illusion!
