I have honestly been so depressed over my last few hatches that I dont even know for sure how many I had hatch out for this thread. I was using the crappy bulb thermometers and I swear they are junk. I've never had worse hatches than since using them. I know I have 2 Black Australorpes, 7 mottled anconas (two died later due to the porch getting too hot), 1 silkie, several EE and EE/NHR crosses. I'm thinking about 7 or 8. I had only 2 of my 14 turkey eggs make it to lockdown and one hatched out yesterday and the other was backwards and died. Some of those eggs were marked with a date (blue slate) and some of them were a week old before they were sent and most didn't even beging to grow :( Kinda heartbreaking when you pay good money for old eggs. Anyway, glad for the ones I have but I've had a BAD hatch rate this go round.

Ssssorry. Are these all shipped eggs?? ANd which bulb thermometer are you referring to, the one that comes with the LG or the fish tank types?

Which incubator are you using now? Not the LG, right?

The more and more I look at this chick the more and more I see that it wasnt supposed to hatch. It wasnt zipping and wondered why. Well now I know. The leg is not only place wrong his inside never were aborbed properly and one of his eyes doesnt even open that I saw. I dont know what happened during incubation that caused this.

Anyone else?

I'm sorry. :( I guess sometimes mother nature knows better then us.....

Sorry about your chick. I find the process miraculous because every detail much go right for a beautiful healthy chick to hatch. It rarely goes wrong--but it does soemtimes. If you want to know more, see the university sites for details.

I know I'm way behind on this post..but when my chicks haven't absorbed all of the yolk yet..I keep them separated from the rest, put neosporin on the yolk, and let them lay there and wake up. Or, if it's a lot, I leave it in the bator until it has absorbed most of it..the humidity helps with that. Not sure what your chick is doing now, but I hope all is well. The left leg is sometimes just up against the body and it won't use it until it is fully awake. The eyes, will not open, sometimes for a day until it is fully awake. Just have to wait and give it some time. I find this all happens with the ones that I have helped out. I helped an Exchequer out yesterday. It did not open it's eyes for the full day. The feet were curled and the legs were tight against the body. I will give mine some vito sol, but, I only use enough to just barely color the water yellow. I have found that full strength for these little ones does more harm than good. My little one is in there screaming for attention this morning. I should get a picture of the little thing. It came from a pullet egg, so it's pretty small These pullet eggs were too small for them to turn, I knew it when I saw them. I have two more that I am working on helping out. One didn't make it, didn't even have it's head and beak up..too small an egg. I'm thinking sellers shouldn't sell eggs that are really small, especially when it is a LF baby that will be trying to hatch.
