THE MOTHER'S DAY HATCH-A-LONG!!!! The last day to join in and set eggs with us is April 28th.

I set this morning. I was tired last night and couldn't figure out how to accommodate the extra eggs going in. First group was set Easter Sunday, shipped eggs set in cartons. Now I'm setting more tall eggs ( turkeys) and marans which I often can't see the point so set on the side until the air cell develops. In my LG the air is not evenly warm at 99.5 every where, the bottom is cooler.

My solution, I think , is to build a Lego platform to raise the eggs up into the 99.5 zone. Better go tell the boys to get building!

I set:

BR turkey
buff orpingtons
marans
Am/EE

May add more today.

I set this morning also..I have Silkie eggs in..plus the gal threw in a couple of bantam millie colored cochins.

This is a little off topic but its not getting an answer on the other thread. Can anyone help please.

Staggered hatches in the bator...

Half of the eggs are only from 4/19/2012 The rest are piping and trying to hatch. Is it okay to raise the humidity to 67% to help the hatchers? Will this harm the others? Also turning off the turner so the ones that are ready can hatch... Should I move them to another incubator / brooder to hatch out and let the others continue to be on turner + lower humidity?? Thanks!!!

That is a tuffy. You really don't want to open that bator right now..but...hmmm...if there was some way to get those other eggs out without lowering the humidity too much, I would move them..personally..maybe you can hike it real high then hurry and just reach in to get the eggs, don't lift the lid all the way!
Anyone else??

Ok... Here's what you do... If you have another Bator to use as a hatcher you should use it. You can move the pipped BUT you need to have a bowl of warm water and damp paper towels. Dip finger in water and dab on all exposed membrane. Not soaking though, then wrap damp paper towel around each egg to move them. Do this as quickly as possible.

If you want, you can raise the humidity in your existing Bator. You will not drown the others. The drowning happens at the very end when the air sac is not big enough from lack of evaporation. It won't be such a problem at this stage. Two days at higher humidity will merely keep them from evaporating. When hatch is done, go for dry hatch method to ensure the evaporation happens on the newer eggs. It's ok! But the egg turner being in there for hatching is a bad idea.

My two cents... Hope it helps!

I have 2 incubators. But still it sometimes doesn't go as planned. If you can , move the ready to hatch to the new incubator. A little lower temp while warming up is ok because the live chicks are making heat. So the temp should be at least 97 to prevent chilling the chicks when they are moved.

I had to deal with a very staggered hatch, 1-2 hatching a day over a week. I did have to pull chicks, resoak sponges and turn eggs by hand. The trick was to get chicks out before others pipped, and even then . . . . my point is I hatched about 15 chicks this way and it actually worked. Pete55 only increases moisture once he sees internal pips and I did the same thing: removed the sponges when no evidence of pipping.

ALso, in my first hatch I did not think the air cell was increasing well enough, so I used a PC fan to blow air out of the incubator and put an AC in a nearby room to decrease the moisture content; put directly into the room caused temp problems.

It is complicated ! Hopefully some of this info will help you decided what to do.

Thank you. Very helpful!! :)) I feel better and can make some good choices. I'll let you all know what happens. I see two with holes now, waiting on the others. Trying to get the temp to at least 60% and no turner is on.
