they take longer to hatch and therefor it take longer to see anything in them!!!!!!!!!! I like to candled chicken eggs on day 7-10-18. turkey eggs on day 14-20-25. the first year I did 2 turkey eggs, I got rid of them on day 8 and when I opened the eggs they had been growing!!!!

Hi fellow mother's day hatchers, I have a question. We are new to incubating, this is our first try. I am wondering what the best procedure is for taking them out and candling and putting them back in the incubator? We have 42 eggs set and we did a spot check of about six random eggs from different spots in the incubator all were veined and moving very much (which was so cool for my daughters and I to see). We had one duck egg that looked to have no development but I thought I would recheck that one at day 10. We candled these on day seven and want to do a complete candle of them all on day 10. I am worried about opening and closing the incubator so many times. We have to candle them in one of our bathrooms (it is the only room in our house with no window). So would it be easier to load up a 24 egg carton and take them all into the bathroom in two trips? Sorry for the long post, I hope I explained it well enough. Thanks in advance for any ideas or advice!

I use egg cartons to carry eggs, and feel less likely to drop any.

THis is a good opportunity to rearrange the eggs so they are not in the same hole. THe incubators have warmer and cooler zones. A broody hen is off for an hour--at least mine are.

That's what I was thinking!!

I was always too chicken to move my incubator til the last time and I had the loudest chick in the world hatch about 1130 pm....and it was in my room. No one could sleep, so I very carefully and successfully moved it. phew! I broke such a sweat, because i'm extraordinarily clumsy.

So off topic, am I allowed to ask people to view my submission in a contest on diynetwork? Its not voting and you don't have to register but you can give it stars 5 being the worst (which is what I want) but its not exactly a contest. They judge you on your video and stuff...I think that it probabaly helps though. So is that against the rules?

if it's linking to another forum.. then it's against the rules.. otherwise it should be ok as far as I know

I love all of the broody pics!

I don't have a room without windows either, so I wait until after nightfall and turn off all of the lights in the house and the TV. I set up a clean dish towel in front of the incubator in case I drop an egg on the table, and I candle right there. It makes for quite a dramatic show after going around and turning off all of the lights.

I think you can. I recall being asked to go to websites to vote for people's pictures, Christmas ornaments, and other stuff over the last year. No reason why you can't do the same, especially because DIY Network is not a chicken forum, so there is not much overlap/competition there.

Today is Day 8 for most of you:

It is Day 21 for me!

it's ANY forum (no idea if DIY has a forum or not).. as per rule # 11
"Luring members to other forums is not allowed and we prohibit discussing drama that happens on other forums. Just don't want to see anyone getting yelled at.. lol
