THE MOTHER'S DAY HATCH-A-LONG!!!! The last day to join in and set eggs with us is April 28th.

Ok, here are a couple of pictures for the contest..of my baby Silkie, and baby Showgirl...used the same flowers...oh well... :)

Picture 1

Picture 2..of my showgirl...the only one I got to hatch..
One is asleep, and one is wide awake!

The sleeping chick is adorable! What generation is your showgirl? I just hatched my first one just over a week ago... I don't know if 1st gen counts as a real showgirl but I'm so excited that's what I'm going to call them anyway... I keep seeing eggs from nice ones for sale... might cheat and get some eggs a few generations ahead of mine..

1 showgirl and 3 silkies (1 out of a turken egg, no bareneck :-/)

Strange thing is.. the eggs on the left side of the bator are pipped or already hatched (except 1 polish...) ... the one on the right in the picture was still coming out and there's one pip... all the others aren't doing anything- BAH! I hope they start doing something soon... it worries me that "one side" isn't... well... as early as everyone else? Okay, over-worrying... lol.

Enough have hatched that my eggs are all unstacked now... XD So once these hatch I can start stacking more eggs again... right?

Good observation on noting which side is hatching before the other--my incubators are not even either and I try to move the eggs around as I hand turn.

TIme to re stack after this hatch is finished or after it's cleared out ! ? With or without the turner moving ? I'm very curious . . . .

Quote: Go for it--always good to bring in fresh blood to reduce inbreeding issues. I have olives from 3 different breeders. FBCM from 3 different breeders, BO from 3 different lines, you get the idea!

So I went down to check on my broody this morning and see if she had 2 new chicks from the pipped eggs I gave her and well I had a 50-50 success rate..... I couldn't hear anything and tried to push her and saw an egg.... so I lifted her a bit and saw the silkie egg I had put under her not hatched. I picked it up and it was dead .... Hole big enough to see the beak as it was when I put it under her last night but now the beak was no longer moving

..... So I pushed her again to reveal a lovely splash marans chick. I am so sad and feel like I have turned into a chick murderer ..... First the 4 eggs I gave her and then confused her so she switched nests and they are surely dead and now this poor little silkie ..... I guess I have to focus on the 1 lovely Splash Marans chick under her and I guess I will add a few more chicks to Popcorn and not risk the pip situation again. I can't figure out what went wrong with that chick.... It did not look to be shrink wrapped so I'm not really sure why it died. Oh well lesson learned ...... I have 2 pips in the incubator right now so I don't really want to open it can they hurry up and hatch so I can give Popcorn some more babies!!!

I had the same problem with my silkies about 7 months ago. They pipped but never went any further. Then I tried again with dry incubation and they all hatched but one.

Congrats on your new ones!

Yeah I had that happen too but no pips!! It was so depressing!!! I used dry incubation this time as well and I had one hatch in the bator overnight and I see another pip this morning as well as another Marans pip which will make 7 BBS Marans chicks!!!!

and I didn't read about the sandpaper method until day 15 so these were just regular set eggs!!! I have 4 more Marans eggs in the bator but 2 were the abandoned overnight eggs and 1 of the other 2 had a really strange looking aircell so I don't expect that one to hatch. The silkie that hatched issupposed to be a partridge which I don't really want and that is the only reason I didn't put it under popcorn.... so see natural selection working in its favor

Violet had a very itty bitty baby under her this morning!!!! SO CUTE. I'll take pics once it warms up a bit outside <3
That is so exciting!!! What kind of chick is under your broody??? I can't wait to see my broody in action!!!

She has been so good and patient ....

Well...let it hatch! lol..hopefully by now, you have a baby? If not, looks like it won't be long. Just keep that humidity up around 60/65. You should have a little one soon..dark egg...Marans?

Yes it's a Black Copper Marans. Now I realize how silly it was to start learning to incubate with that egg but I didn't know that when I started. I also put only 3 eggs in there and would have put more if I had read more first.

So you just have the 1 egg? If this one makes it out you might want to go get it a buddy at the feed store.... They need a friend and if it is an only chick is will wine and cry all the time .... and you will have to give it tons of attention!!! Good luck with the hatch.... any progress???
