Ember and Cyrus were still talking on deck when this all happened-
So Ember finally got involved-
Gecko took to the air just as Galen snatched him by the shoulder. He fell back, barely catching his footing. He crained his neck past Gelen watching the bird in flight. It's getting away... It's getting away!!
Gecko ducked away from Galen, not losing sight of the bird. He thrust his wings out, knocking anything that might get in his way, and jumped to the air. The Tesla wasn't getting away this time. Nothing was going to stop him.
Galen stood on the deck and watched, feathers bristling, feeling utterly defeated.
If Quasar’s training proved true, and with the head start he had, he could easily loose his assailant in the forest.
Many sketchy business dealings had taught him that taking the long confusing way back to your residence was always safer, so naturally he’d instilled it into his partner.
But if it didn’t work- no, he told himself, you promised you were done with that…
Gecko flew high. Catching the bird in a swoop would be the quickest way to reach it. He leveled his wings, locked eyes on his prey and prepared for his dive.
"Hey! Where do yo think you're going?" Jintao stormed up behind Galen. "Drop to the deck or I'll shoot you down and feed your wings to the cabin boys!"
Gecko's wings seized. He looked down and the tall man held a hand beneath his coat like he was hiding a pistol from sight. What was it with these fellows and their need to shoot? his mind instantly went to Ember in the powder room. They must be working together!
Gecko dropped to the deck and fell to his knees. He held his hands up, now trembling for his life. "I- I wasn't eh, going nowhe-ah, uh, saa. Just-y... stwatching my wings, that-all."
Jintao gave Galen a sharp stare and towered above Gecko. He turned his glare onto Gecko, and moved his hand behind his back. "A lying fool is all you are. You're lucky that I don’t chop your wings off anyway. Men like you are only fit for tar and feathers."
Gecko sank lower, holding his trembling hands above his head. Jintao stepped back, his chin high.
"There's dust on the deck," Jintao glanced at Galen. He was surely part of the problem too. "The Captain will want it spotless by the time we sail. You two will get to it. Have I made myself clear?"
So Ember finally got involved-
"Galen."
Ember's voice cut across the silent deck, earning more than one turn of a head from the spectating crewmates. The Quartermistress gave a sharp yank of a slender finger, gesturing the Harpy toward her. Her other arm was pressed squarely across her back, nearly hidden behind the cascading black feathers.
"A word, if I may."

Jintao held his breath. It was Ember, one of the last individuals he wanted to see, but she was holding her rank with control, which he had to honor. He locked eyes on Galen and motioned his head toward Ember. Go.
Gecko sank as low as he could go, his head growing light. "Galen, she's got a gun," his whisper trembled. "She's-ah gonna shut ya deed."

@-Shade-
Galen flinched and turned to face the angry female.
He couldn’t stop his feathers from bristling in agitation. Every single instinct his father had hammered into his brain was begging to break free.
“I swear,” he mumbled under his breath, “if I don’t get a break…”
He started towards Ember.
“Well, if she’s going to shoot me she’d better hurry up and do it.”
She waited almost motionless, flaming red eyes tracking him unwavering as he approached.
Jintao had gripped the situation with a quick and dangerous command, one that had set every crewmate nearby into a resigned, almost uneasy silence. Ember's jaw was set clenched at the realization she was actually impressed.
But no matter. She could note what worked, remember what didn't. If Jintao had even a week's more experience at sea than her, it was experience worth shadowing- for now. She'd surpass him when the time came.
Galen stopped before her, his wings and expression coated with a heavy frustration, an anxious resignation.
"Explain."
Her voice was low, void of emotion, and spoken soft enough for no prying ears to hear.

Galen dug at his fingertips with his thumbnail and let his chest rise and fall for a few moments.
____________
“Explain.”
His father’s voice was low and dangerous.
If he could say anything to stop the blows he would have but he couldn’t through his puffy, tear choked throat.
The large, dark form, outlined in flickering fire light strode toward him and wrenched him from the corner.
“I couldn’t!” Galen managed to gasp.
“Couldn’t?” Father leaned down close to his face. He could feel his hot rancid breath. “My son-” he spat, “‘COULDN’T’ do as ee’s told.”
He tossed his child back into the corner like some discarded piece of rubbish.
Galen felt the air leave his lungs as his body hit the hard wood and stone.
His lip was bleeding and he quickly wiped the small trickle of crimson away.
Father chuckled and turned away as Galen gasped and wheezed, trying to breathe again, pressing himself farther into the corner.
He’d never kill anything for this monster, no matter how hard he was hit and how many nights he went hungry.
Never. Again.
______________
“I-“ he balled his hands into tight fists praying to whatever god that he wasn’t trembling, “it was my fault. The crazed fellow was on the receiving end of some aggression and I offered to help, but he nearly killed my bird and I got angry… it won’t happen again…”
Ember's eyebrows arched slightly in surprise.
"Let me get this straight."
She wasn't certain if she felt deserving of his fear or concerned.
"You were trying to avoid conflict, and in turn, he attempted to kill your friend?"
There was almost a soft note to her tone, almost gentle, but not quite. Her wings flared slightly as she stole a glance at Cyrus.
"Why is that any fault of yours?"

And TA DA- now we are here and I'm about to write another sceneget it together, he told himself. He hadn’t expected that memory to resurface. Granted, it was an unpleasant one but in that moment it wasn’t real…so why am I distressed…
He’d subconsciously pressed his wings behind himself.
“I shouldn’t have threatened him, used force…I wasn’t thinking straight-“
He mentally smacked himself, shut up
