The Neighbors Dog

Hi all, I am new to the forum, and have a terrible situation. I will try to be brief...

In March we got our first ever biddies. 5 Buffs, 12 RIR, and 1 Sex Link Rooster.

We got a new neighbor who is staying in a home that is for sale, she asked my wife if she could kennel her dog (a pitbull) on our porch on Mondays due to the fact the owners do not want a dog at their home. I protested but was overruled and the dog spent the night in a kennel on my back porch. 2 weeks and things were fine, until this week, Tuesday morning I left for work after checking on my flock and around 11ish I got a call from my wife crying, the dog had got out of the kennel and was in the chickens pen. 11 birds dead and one severely injured. I came home and took care of her. I hated to kill her but it was the only humane thing to do. I had 6 birds left and several are still injured. 2 more died before the end of Tuesday, I have 4 still alive today. 2 RIR's are standing and walking around the box. One RIR has a broken wing and a broken leg at the knee joint. The only Buff that survived has a broken leg at the knee joint.

Now for the questions.

What can I do for the injured birds? Should the dog's owner be paying for the destruction her dog created? If so how much? Should I be reporting this dog to the local animal control?

We bought these birds for eggs and meat but they quickly became our pets and we loved them, especially our sex link roo-roo (Jerk Chicken), I miss them terribly and would like to save the remaining 4 birds. Any guidance and advice is appreciated.

Your neighbor's dog was on your porch because they (the neighbors) didn't want a dog at their house. And their dog, that you were keeping/looking after at your house got loose and killed some of your chickens so you shot their dog?

I don't think you can make your neighbor pay because it was your responsibilty to keep the dog locked up. But you could always tell your neighbor what happened and maybe he/she will be willing to you help you out since it was their dog.

I hate to say it, but IMO if you agreed to kennel the dog then you took the risk of the dog getting out. You can ask for them to replace the chickens, and I think it is the right thing for them to do, but I don't think it is their responsibility. As far as calling animal control, why would you? You allowed the dog on your property. The dog was just doing what is natural to him/her, dogs are generally predators and the birds were prey.

That is just my humble opinion....

I am new so I can't give advice on the injured birds. I would post a thread in Emergencies/Disease/Injuries section with pictures and people can help you out with that....

I think he culled the injured bird, he didn't shoot the dog....that is just how I read it.

Yeah, maybe he did kill the bird. Somehow, I put a firearm in there that wasn't.

Good intentions gone bad.
Would never have a pit bull on my property. A few weeks back there was a stray pit bull running up and down the road. I knew what he was after, so I hid in the trees, as soon as he stepped foot on my property to go after my chickens I dispatched him. Luckily I was home when this happened.
A predator is a predator good intentions or not.

Hello...sorry for the drama and loss....

I read it that he "took care of the serverly injured chicken", not the dog....but the dog would be the next to go..SSS...I DON'T tolerate attacks or tresspassing on my property, I know that he "crated" the dog willingly on his porch, but in my opinion that was pending problems, well now there is a SERIOUS problem....unfortunatly the dog will be back for the balance of the birds...so if the "owners" (poor excuse in my book) are unwilling or unable to take care of the dog, he WOULD remain crated and chained for 2 hours....if animal control did not come get it, there would be a new flowerbed in the yard. Around here I would only be saving tax money, because AC has a immediate kill policy on pit bull, and any agressive animals....

for the record, I have had a problem with the local "adorable, loving pit bull"....and the owner for that matter....so I am a little bias.....

Yes, I culled the bird. As far as the dog goes, the neighbor is staying in the house, which is up for sale, the Owners, do not want the dog, but the tenant has her anyway. My wife, (the animal lover) allowed the dog to be kenneled on our porch, agreement was the dog was to be gone before the neighbor left for work. Key word here is kenneled. the dog broke out of the kennel. then got in the pen. the dog is alive no weapons have been involved.
