The neighbors' dog!

Once neighbor's German Shepherd was growling at me while I was walking up to my front door. My closest neighbor is 4-500 feet from my door. I went in; got my 9mm, opened the door and shot 2x directly at the dog's shadow, close to where it attached to the dog. The dog ran home yelping with me following behind (less 9mm). Neighbor asked what all the commotion was about, I told him what the dog had done and what I had done adding - "Next time I will shoot your dog, gut him and hang him on your porch".

Never saw the dog again - it finally was killed by its' owner when it bit his handicapped son.

I have very pleasant neighbors, I treat them as they treat me!

People have a threshold of understanding that you need to reach before they understand that you are serious about not wanting their dog running on your property. DO what ever it takes to reach that point of understanding.... My neighbor was a little dense the first time the dog was on my property, but they learned that I was serious the second and last time it showed up.

Be stern, swift and don't apologize for defending yourself, family or your property.

Good Luck

I am all for the SSS method for repeat offenders or for uncooperative neighbors, but if no dead chickens and all you want to do is keep the dog away, I would go with pepper spray. It will only hurt, but not permanately injure the animal. I mean, a dog can be taught. It might not be your job to teach this particular dog, but if he learns he is not welcomed, you have fixed your problem. And I do believe that good fences make good neighbors.

See here's the thing that gets to me is that the dog was inside the OP's fenced yard.
Either the OP needs to fix the fence or the dog is really good at getting in. If the OP can fix their fence then it's their responsibility. BUT If it's the latter, then you have a LOT to worry about.

Personally I see a dog BREAKING INTO my fenced yard the same as I would see a human BREAKING INTO my house -- and I have the same solution for both.

I agree. It's also worth noting that you can cut your feed bill in half if the birds get to free range all day. Chickens don't wander far, at least mine don't, so if you have enough space they stay on your own property. However, dogs wander quite a bit.

Wow a lot of people have a lot to say about this topic ans since I started it I will throw my two-cents into the mix. First, let me make myself clear on the fence issue. When I said the dog came through the fence, it is a perfectly good fence and does its job at keeping my dogs and chickens in my yard so I will NOT fix my barrier fence when the neighbors are allowing their dog to run on my property when my animals do not leave my yard. In fact, the chickens were still inside their chicken kingdom, not free ranging out in the yard, so if this dog had gotten to my flock he would have to had to have gone through two fences but I am suppose to do what put up a third fence? Yeah that will not happen. The neighbors need to keep their dogs out of my yard and away from my chickens. The neighbors allow their pack of ankle biters and bulldogs run freely all over the neighborhood. They need to take the responsiblity that comes along with owning animals. I have nine cows, five cats, nine chickens, and two dogs and my animals DO NOT roam freely because I am a responsible pet owner. Second, I will not harm the little dog unless it attempts to hurt or kill one of my animals. Then it is my right as a property owner to protect what is mine that lives on my property. I do not kill animals just for the fun of it; I kill aniamls to feed my family and my family does not eat dog. People need to take responsibly for their aniamls and others do not need to assume that it is my fault the neighbors' dog got into my yard. I have a good barrier fence and a very good chicken coop/run for the protection of my aniamls.

Growling German shepards are a different story from a little yipper running around the outside of the run. Don't shoot the dog! -It hasn't done any harm & isn't threatening your family.

You are on the right track with warning the owners. In my old neighborhood we had a trigger happy psycho killing the neighbor dogs. He caused a feud that is still going today 20 years later. Just use your head you know what to do.

She never said that she was going to shoot the dog. As a matter of fact, she said that she wouldn't harm it all if it hadn't hurt anything. I don't think it's fair to compare the OP with a "trigger happy psycho killing the neighbor dogs." BTW shooting dogs on your property when they are harrassing, injuring or killing your pets or livestock doesn't mean that a person is a trigger happy psycho. It means that they care more about their animals than the dog owners cared about their dogs. I don't know the story behind the neighbohood feud, but if the dogs that got shot were roaming and on his property, I'll side with the psycho. If he was shooting dogs over the fence while they were in their own yard, I'll side with the dog owners.

On a somehat lighter, but relate note...
Last week my neighbor's cat scaled the 6 foot fence to get into the chicken run and scared the girls.
I couldn't decide if I was happy that at least THAT cat showed an interest in my rat population or sad that he had scared the hens.
In the end I decided no harm no fowl.

just because its little does not mean it cant do harm! a friend of mine hade her own weiner dogs tunnle into her run and slaughter her chickens, small dogs can be just as dangerus as large dogs , with one difference- if it comes at you (or your chicken)it is punt-able ,i dont condon kicking a dog but if you dont always cary a gun in your back pocket a good swift kick to the rear works wounders on attacking ancle bitters ( i have been atacked by a group of agresive ackle bitters)

This is funny but I have to say it. I am not afraid of any type of animal. I have experience with almost any type of farm animal and normal GA wildlife that there and I will take an agressive 2000 pound bull over a an ankle biter any day! They can be mean lil jokers when they want to be. Also, let me say that I have not seen the lil dog any more so maybe he will not return.
