I forgot about Salems Lot! I loved that! I think that was my first king novel too. Up until I started reading King, I read Louis L'Amour. Then I started reading thrillers and mysteries.Agreed, the spider was a bad idea, a real let down in the scary factor from the clown.
Salems Lot was the first King book I read (lots of years ago) and that one gave me nightmares.

Mark. Your hatred of clowns is starting to concern meThey have their purpose. Like if you're stuck on the ice and there is a clown handy, throw it under the tires they make good traction. If you want to practice shooting and don't have a target, use a clown. Last but not least if you need a punching bag, get an inflatable clown.
I had one of those inflatable bozzo bopper toys when I was a kid. I loved that thing!
