The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

There is an article in our local paper about a back yard flock in our county becoming infected with avian flu. The flock owner brought in new chickens from a different county and, apparently, did not follow quarantine protocols.

I do wonder why people do not quarantine prior to adding new flock members?
I think a lot of people just don’t know about quarantine and/or just don’t think it applies to them, don’t think they need to because it won’t happen to them, etc. etc.

I think the question of why quarantine isn't practiced is due to a variety of things...some people don't know to do it, some think they can tell by looking at birds if they are sick or not and some people are willing to take the risk of mixing without quarantining.

How is everyone!?
Hi Kelsey, hope you’re having a good day.
Good morning everyone
God afternoon Sue.

I agree with others that think there are various reasons. Being in an average backyard, is quarantine really possible? I don’t know about that. Plus, people aren’t even aware that they should deal with their healthy birds, then the sick and change clothes before they go back to the healthy. And they always want to nurse the sick back to health which in many cases puts their whole flock at risk. It’s a cruel world and people are soft.

Sometimes quarantine doesn't work. In the case of Falina, Salina, Melinda none showed symptoms after 2 weeks. 2 years later they still show no symptoms but almost all of their chicks die before 6 months. My flock has avian leukosis now. The breeder was NPIP. They were the only adults to enter my flock since my original hens. I love my flock so I've chosen to let them live until they die of natural causes. No more in, no more out. And no chicks ever again.
