The amount of special needs kids is staggering.
Good morning, DMC.
It is isn't it? I have a son who is adhd, and I thought raising him was rough, but we never considered it a disability. He behaved as well as other kids his age, he just required extra activity and mental stimulation.
The only special needs child that I can remember in my daughter's class was a little girl with down syndrome. I was proud that my daughter befriended her and invited her to outings. She had a tutor but other than that, she was treated the same as the other kids in school.
I don't know when all these special needs problems came up but it does seem like they're disproportionate to the general population now. I think a lack of discipline at home is a big part of the problem. My grandson, who is severely autistic, has been repeatedly told he is special and that his anger issues are normal. He has a lot more potential than he will ever realize because everyone makes allowances for his poor behavior. I feel like they are doing him a deservice.
