The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

@N F C I have Khaki Campbells and Rouens....we have 5hens of each. The KCs started laying at 17-18wks, we got them the first part of June as day olds and they have laid ever since...they have only missed a few days during their molt...the Rouens slack back this time of year, but we do get some from them, but could be a couple of days between them....we are getting 5 fairly regular every day from the ducks, there is 1 khaki hen that is still molting and I believe she has stopped for the time being, but the other 4 are laying everyday. The breed of duck makes a difference, as some are just seasonal layers....the khakis lay all year long, this is their 2nd winter here and they laid all thru winter last year. They also stop laying when/if they go broody, too.

These are very calm chickens.

There are three or four breeders here in California. Some eggs were sent East this summer but I do not know if the person is going to breed them.

I hope to one day import more...when I live at a place where I can work with them

I hope someone out here starts raising them!

Wow they seem great.

I noticed the Khaki's in the Meyer catalog. DW thinks maybe we will get ducks when she retires. I've already said *I* am NOT dealing with the water requirements of ducks, not in the winter. They can hang out in the pond behind the barn all they like in the spring through fall though.

:eek:do they lay a LOT of eggs! 340/year. BUT!!!!! The description on the website says 165-210. Not exactly slacking but why the big difference?

I don't blame ya a single bit there either Bruce....I sure wouldn't. Tho, they would need enough to submerge their heads in, but not swim. I've noticed the discrepancies in the eggs/yr also....but, I know what it is that I experience and maybe locale may play a part, not really sure....then again, they don't want to get on the old "Liable" hook of false advertising. Ya would really enjoy their antics and they do talk to ya, can be trained, and will stay together as a flock better than chickens do.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think they technically NEED a pool or pond, they just like it. So it wouldn't be too much more work in the winter as far as I see. The only thing they truly need is water deep enough they can stick their nostrils in to rinse out or swallow or something when they eat. But that can be accomplished with just a deep bucket/pan/bowl, whatever or even simply breaking up some ice in the pond. :)

Oh and if you do get ducks, as much as I love Meyer, I think I might order ducks from Metzer Farms instead if I ever do simply because Metzer only does waterfowl and specializes in it so they might have better stock but that is just a theory. But they also have TONS of info available on their website and are knowledgeable people.

Can you tell I've thought about ducks too?

The only slightly bad thing as far as I can see is they can have salmonella. Chickens carry it too, of course, but with ducks, they have the gross muddy water that can harbor it. But of course if you don't provide a pool or provide clean water, not an issue

Except your mom wouldn't have slipped on ice in the summer ;)
You sister is lucky, she can blame EVERYTHING on landing on her head as a very young infant :D

Oh yeah, someone higher up knows something got FUBARed. What do you bet the developers said "it will take this long" and management said "do it in less time". There was once a 2nd level on a big project with a sign on his desk that said something like "There is never enough time to do it right the first time but there is always time to do it over". Presumably a suggestion that enough time SHOULD be given the FIRST time. No surprise he was pushing the schedule, things did not go well when the project was "finished on time".

"Hello, this is Teila, how can I help you?"
"Did you open a ticket?"
"No? Well I am not allowed to work on anything that isn't officially logged first and everything must be done in the order received. You may talk to my manager if you like. Have a good day."

Sorry, nothing I've ever looked into.

Maybe because you don't have to go to the school bus anymore?
That and I own a blow dryer now:lol:

Morning :frow

Thanks for all the duck talk, some day I'm going to need to get some. We actually were building a duck Taj Mahal in FL, I had 10 ducklings ordered from Metzer, and then we found out we were moving so all plans cancelled. Some day though!

Today's weather is starting same as yesterday, it's 9* right now.

Today is Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, have any of you been to the memorial in Hawaii? My parents went years ago but I've never been.
