The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

Can't slap a different plug on? I would be tempted.

I'd be tempted for hatching other birds, but there have been a few people try this for quail and the quail just don't seem to use it and get cold. Those expensive heat plates get the same results. I have noticed the quail are a lot cuddlier than chicken chicks in that first week. They peep madly and the mother comes to them to warm them up, so maybe the heat gradient put out by a heatlamp means they can find the heat by themselves. Who knows!

The 5 eggs that were abandoned have all pipped internally and a brooder awaits them. I just have to find a little water dish. I learned the hard way to never forget to add marbles - I had one new Button chick drown in 3mm of water awhile ago (not sure what that is in inches sorry - not a lot)! The ones under the little hen, Spicey, are doing really well and are huge. All 5 are not going to fit under her soon. It's so hot here that a few times today I've seen them happily sitting in a group while Spicey wanders about.

Evening Friends :frow

Just popped in on my way to do my greets.

Aw gees Jae I hope you get your brooder woes sorted in time :fl

N F C Thank You! I love Ta-Da! Nice to see him again!

Go Ken! :clap

Jae I hear ya and will mini vent myself .. when I comment with ‘what I do’ and that I respect others may do it differently, I now do not follow the thread. I have shared my opinion and then I drop out unless I am alerted that I have been quoted directly. I get a little frustrated reading all the ‘why you should not do that’, ‘why what I said is apparently wrong’ and ‘my way or the highway’ ;)

Anyways, just saw this on FB .. definitely nightmare material! I do believe that is a broom head it is hanging on to.

I had to change the bulb. I had a 60W reflector one in the heatlamp and that was too hot, so I've put a normal, cheap 75W incandescent bulb (getting harder to find those) in and that's perfect.

I just need to vent. I've been noticing an increase in 'scare mongering' on this site and it really annoys and saddens me! I found someone who has just joined, first post - she'd found a food that her hens actually liked and wanted to share it, and she got crucified because it was a grain based one (and not a pellet one - so it couldn't be as nutritious)! Then someone else chimed in because it had kelp in it and that was 'really bad' to feed them since Fukushima because it would be full of radiation. Like anything that enters our food chain doesn't get rigorously tested. Honestly!!! I've been told I shouldn't feed our dog raw food because we'll all get salmonella (hasn't happened in almost 7 years and that was with babies in the house for some of that time who loved our dog). Someone else got told to get their humidity down immediately or they'd drown their chicks (it was near hatching for goodness sake). A bit of kindness goes a long way - which is why I love hanging out with you guys! :hugs Let me just say thank goodness for this thread!

X2 - :hugs.... I know what you mean.

 I hope you never see one of those. At first I thought it was a crab.

Gotta say, cold isn't always nice but quiet woodstove heat sure is!

Woodstove heat would be nice, enjoy!

I take it back - Ken CAN fix everything! I have to run back over there in a few minutes, but just wanted to say - my husband ROCKS ! Not bad for a 70 year old man!

Not bad for anyone of any age B, way to go Ken!

I remembered you enjoying Ta-Da, lol. Uh, that spider as big as a horse...YIKES!

Yikes! I hope the chickens kill them off!

I just hope those spiders don't enjoy the taste of chicken!

All we got done yesterday was positioning the net supporting ropes - lost a lot of time having to go to buy more and moving them around multiple times to get the spacing somewhat even. Have screw eyes on the tree trunk - will have long pieces left over to use there once DH gets the cords tied and cut. And then to hang that trick, tacky looking netting :)
