The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

At least you don't have to eat it ;) That is a lot to move. I only get two 50 pound bags at one time. Good for a month in the winter.

These days I'm going through 50# a day.

Ron I too miss fresh, I've got kale and spinach right now and will be planting soon. Already put the peas and onions out, but may not get any onions this year as one of my turkeys has decided they don't belong there. Since the girls have discovered the garden, I'm going to have to put up a 7' fence of deer netting. The girls have also thinned my carrots for me.

I want that and tomatoes!
Given where you live, you'll likely have tomatoes before DMC or I will have the plants in the ground.

Or maybe I could rake them onto a big tarp and drag that over?
Yep, that is a great way to collect leaves. You don't even pick them up.

But they lay around a lot during the day, especially if the wood stove is burning.
I have 3 doing that at this moment. Rascal must be upstairs.

When we got back to the village, the water level had increased so we may just get cut off and not be able to go back tomorrow for a big shop; we shall see.
You could always swim and tow some sort of vessel to cart the purchases back home.

Busy day yesterday...but I'm here....

@KDOGG331 Didn't they do a skin scraping too?

@Teila, you risked a trip to the village? We TOLD you to stay home, doggone it!

@JaeG. I think the last time I sat down in a movie theater was probably when we saw Twister. The guys didn't want to see it, so Linda, Lori and I went to that showing in one theater and Steve, Russ and Ken veered off to another theater in the same complex to see something else. That was the last time, because I hated it. Not the movie necessarily, but the sound! It's always so doggone loud in theaters. And is there anything more fun than a sleepover with a family of giggly kids? Bet your mom had just as good a time as they did!

We think we know what happened to Kendra. In this new 'palace" that the kids bought, the transition strips between the different types of flooring aren't the strips that are flat with a slight dome to them. In this house they are just strips of painted wood, like this sorta: ] , but flipped down. We think she was crawling in to be in the kitchen with us, had a seizure and when she went down on her face she hit that strip. Kenny said the blood is on the edge on the dining room side where the hardwood floor becomes tile. Makes perfect sense...more sense than any other theory. But she was here yesterday after school, and back to her old rowdy self.

We need to have 5 seasons....spring, summer, winter, fall, and unwintering. I'm so sick of mud. The bus drops Kendra off across the street because that's the side of the bus that the handicapped lift is on. Then we have to push her across the street, between our cars to the sidewalk, and over the snow remaining. Mud...slippery ice.... I think I'm going to see if I have any influence with the town council to see if we can get a bib put in. The sidewalks they put in all over town are just like the transition strip I tried to show before....it just drops about 3 inches on each side. They are nice and wide - 2 people can ride horseback side by side on them - but they just drop off on the street side and on the grass side.

Fighting that wheelchair is getting harder and harder to do. If we just had a gradual, wide, cement "landing" to the gate to the house that would help tremendously. As it is, we have a small sidewalk that comes off the town's sidewalk leading to our gate and it's an abrupt dropoff! I dunno...we have to do something. If the town turns us down, I'll start a doggone "GoFundMe" account. :he Nah, not really. We'll figure out something, but this is getting ridiculous for a 70 year old man and 67 year old woman to try to handle. She weighs 57 pounds now, and is well over 4 feet tall....and she hangs like dead weight when we do have to carry her.

Yeah, I think I'll try that! Just discovered my dad is raking right now actually so I think I'll ask him to save the leaves. And/or help him.

Sort of? He just stuck scotch tape to his skin. but he did look at it under the microscope and I guess it's justas effective! Anyway, he saw bacteria on the skin which is why he put him on an antibiotic but I guess I was more just wondering what would cause the bacteria. Would scratching open the skin and do it? Cause he also has dry, scaly skin, and these red hives like bumps so is also on benadryl. I wonder if the hives made him itchy and the licking and scratching allowed bacteria in? It would make sense, especially with him walking around by the chickens, he probably has plenty on his claws. I might keep him away from the chickens for a bit.

I do wonder what could cause everything though. For instance, the skin condition itself. The hives, dry skin, etc. As long as he is feeling better, I am happy, but I worry by not addressing the root cause it might come back.

Anyway, glad you found out what happened to Kendra! Maybe you could cover the strips with like foam or something? Does she get seizures a lot?

And I hope you can get them to put in better sidewalks! Or maybe she could get a motorized chair? Would probably still need the better sidewalks though.

Good luck with everything!

Oh and also, do people really ride horses down the sidewalk?

And I would have loved to have seen Twister in theaters! I love that movie!

But yes, they do play movies very loud!

Sometimes it doesn't bother me I guess because they don't play it quite as loud or some movies just aren't as loud? But then other times it is wayyyyy top loud!! So I usually just bring earplugs with me and that way, if it's not too bad I just don't use them and if it is crazy loud then I have earplugs and it is the perfect volume! :D

A skin scraping checks for mites that have burrowed under the skin. Yes, they can cause a secondary bacterial infection on the surface, but so can many other things. Flea bite dermatitis, contact dermatitis, compromised immune system, low enzyme levels, wonky PH, dry winter skin, food or environmental allergies...just like with us, anything that makes us itch and scratch causes breaks in the barrier the skin provides, leading to secondary infections. I'm kinda assuming that since he just used the tape, he didn't see anything that led him to believe mites might be the issue - he was there, I wasn't. It's just that in any vet clinic I ever worked at, any dog or cat that was brought in for skin issues automatically had a skin scraping done. That was a while back, so maybe things have changed.

We are going to change out the transition strips..never thought they'd be an issue since she instantly learned to deal with them, but often Kendra is so "normal" to us that we become a little blind to hazards that might lead to injury - just don't even notice them. Sad to say, but it's true. Yes, she has a lot of seizures. She's on 3 different meds for them now and if there is no change in how much more physical they're getting or how often they are happening, they'll look into adjustments or changes at her next appointment. Finding the right combination and balance of meds for seizures is often done by the "hunt and peck" method. It's frustrating, but Jenny and I have both learned the same things trying to find the right meds and dosages for our epilepsy too, so we know how it works. Kendra has the added complication of simply growing. So what worked well at 2 years old ain't gonna work so well at 6 without adjustments.

And yep, people really do ride horses down the sidewalk. This is just a composite shot of a group of photographs, but you can see Little Diane (short, dark hair) her friend Elizabeth and Liz's sister Melissa coming home from school after playing at the playground for awhile.

Gee, Little Diane was littler 15 years ago ;)

Sorry Kendra is having such a time with the seizures. :( :hugs

Yep, she was a lot littler! :lau The seizures are just part of living with and loving Kendra, Bruce. I'm sure we'll get it resolved or at least controlled. If she'd just stop growing!! No, wait...I don't want that either!
