The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

There's no issue that I know of feeding chickens meet yes even chicken it's just that some people, myself included, don't like the cannibal aspect of it and won't feed chickens chicken. Just seems wrong to me. But I don't think there's any known health effects from doing it. And I do feed mine other meats.

Get a dehydrator!

They are great to save left over fruit along with all of the other things you can do

KD, it's just like any food preparation/preservation... Some foods are better dehydrated and others freeze dried. One day I hope to have a freeze dryer next to my dehydrators.

This looks like the model dehydrator that teila posted.

Good morning everyone. Very late start here.

I posted this in another forum but didn't get answers...

I know it's not recommended to feed chickens chicken, but what about feeding them Turkey?

I made a bunch of dill pickled yellow squash last fall that came out too mushy for my liking. Is it ok to give those to the gang, or too much salt?

Nope no ill effects. I'm personally with KD on this one and feed left over chicken to the pigs and left over pork to the chickens but there's no nutritional issue in play with my choices. Pickles should be fine in moderation as you indicated salt is a concern.

I've got wheat bread rising so plan on making a couple of loaves for sandwich bread to take to work. Ron, I got a little brave and substituted about 25% of the wheat flour with bread flour to make it a bit lighter. Results were a little patchier than desired so kneaded in another table spoon or two of bread flour. Is this going to work? I'm getting braver.

Thanks, that makes sense. Is there a way to know what foods are better what way?

The bread sounds good.

And yeah I can't get over that aspect haha

Chickens & pigs all loved the turkey.

My boss made a turkey stock out of 3 turkey carcasses. A lot of meat left, plus bones & veggies. I came home with a 5 gallon pail full :)

Sounds delicious!

Mine too, generally speaking. They don't seem to care for carrots or cucumber peelings though so those bits go direct to the compost pile. And we don't give them used tea leaves or coffee grounds, just doesn't seem like something they would want. They go nuts for apple cores (cut up so they all get some) and their favorite kitchen scrap is anything meat, including gristle, fat and bacon grease.

Mine get bacon grease too. I keep the coffee grounds seperate as the dog doesn’t need those either.
