The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

Is liver sausage anything like liverwurst? My grandpa used to share that with me when I was a kid (Mom wouldn't buy it).
Yup... Same stuff officially spelled leberwurst: leber (aka liver) and wurst (aka sausage). Comes fine or course milled in Germany and sooooo many different variants. Problem is I love them all.... The one constant is that it is made from pork liver as the main ingredient. Keep in mind that when I'd see the butcher on his way to work in the morning he had a cow (likely a steer) pulling the cart, 20+ chickens and a few other birds in cages on the cart and 4-6 pigs tied off to the back of the cart. Wanna talk fresh meat, let's discuss the fact that it walked into the shop this morning.

What ever he didn't sell that day got turned into charcuteri aka some kind of lunch meat or sausage. Pigs and birds were + or - but always one steer. After all he had to pull the cart.:bun

If you'd like the recipe I can give it a shot, but understand I do it mostly by feel.
Do you Bread them?

My Mom used to make liver and onions. Not cooking liver in the house is in my Marriage Contract...along with no kipper snacks....:lau

It is a fungus and treated with copper. Look for fusarium resistant plants for next year.

It is a big problem here in California. The symptoms are yellow leaves that start at the bottom and move up. The plant stops producing tomatoes too.
I had that at our old house pretty much every year.

The older they are, the harder they molt! It makes perfect sense that this would happen.
Depends on the bird. Persephone has always been a hard moulter. This was her first moult - 2013.

Got all this at the store but I might check the dollar store.
I feed my chickens chicken food. If they get people food it is scraps off our plates that would have gone in the compost or trash.

And here I thought I was alone in the world of putting my shopping cart where it belongs.
Nope, I always return them. Pi55e5 me off when people leave them out in the parking spaces.

I always return carts too and try and catch the loose ones headed for trouble. Most of the people I see folks sorta walk the cart back to the store and then give it a good push- it hits the curb and bounces into someone's car. They pretend not to notice.
Yep.

(I have no trouble falling asleep but staying asleep is another matter)
Same here. I fall asleep pretty quick but if my mind is working on something I'll wake up at 2 or 3 and be awake the rest of the night. Brain - SHUT UP!!!

oh, how true these are, husband gets mad at me when i start talking to him, he tells me go to sleep, if i tell him i can't, he tells me to take a sleeping pill, i don't think so
Maybe he is trying to sleep. That is kinda hard with someone talking to you.

It does not matter what the treat is, do not give them more of anything other than chicken feed that they will not eat in 20 minutes. The 20 minutes is for the day

This avoids the 10% rule for treats which is hard to figure out
20 minutes? :lau My girls would down an entire bag of scratch in 20 minutes!

Traitor!!!!!
She's just trying to get out of the extra work Blooie.

Ohh, her offering does sound really good!

Debby or someone with better eyes than mine, please tell me what the sign the cat is holding says :hit:oops:

Blooie, chili dogs sound :drool But what Debby's offering sounds better:drool:drool:drool

KD, what you fed the dog and chickens today sounds awesome... Give me a couple more good paydays and I'll have beef liver for dinner... OOOOOOH so good!:drool:drool:drool:drool:drool

You can have it! Lol I'll mail some :lau

You said beef liver! I love that stuff especially with onions. Chicken livers are great too, fried up all nice and crispy.

And now I'm hungry.

My recipe for beef liver is one of those harden your arteries type southern recipes. Love fried chicken livers and chicken liver pate. Also looking forward to homemade liver sausage once I process the hogs.

I hate liver lol

just remember to always take the leftovers and can back inside, coons will come fast to the smell

Yup! Brought the cans in. And I tried to rinse the blood off the latch and fish juice out of the run.

is there more ways to cook liver but the southern way?

Maybe, but the other ways couldn't be as good!

No liver is good :p

That's usually what I do 99% of the time, strictly chicken feed most days and compost scraps when we have it, but I only got all that stuff because RJ had recommended it for the EE's molt.

KD, Lots of my turkey friends are seeing birds go into early molts this year... As for upping protein, Canned Salmon and Mackerel are better choices for vitamins, proteins and omega's... Eggs are only 12% protein, but they have the perfect balance of amino acids to help a bird take in extra goodies. Canned tuna in oil is ok, but doesn't pack the same punch as the other two types of fish. Oh, and yes, give them the juices along with the fish. BTW, cheap canned pink salmon is better for them than the expensive stuff. Oh, and I'm not a fan of cat food (unless a last resort) due to salt content. Same with Tuna in water, too much salt. Another high vitamin, packed with protein and goodness, but considered gross by most is raw beef or pork (any four legged critter) liver. It's also loaded with Iron.

Although that said, I do kind of regret buying it because they didn't like it anyway and it was expensive. But they did eat it and the dog ate the salmon and will eat the second can too so oh well. The hearts and chicken leg quarters are for the dog.
