I have to replace the Central heat and air here in the next year or so

Might want to check on geothermal, especially if Cal has tax credits. Federal 30% this year.

Before the old AC broke, it could not keep up with keeping the house cool when it was over 105. It would run constantly and the temperature in the house would keep going up. It was very expensive to run too.

Good reason to look into geo since you have such high summer temps. Expensive to squeeze cool out of 105°F air. Easy out of 45°F water.

on the farm I was like you said, out all night or day, the 'rents didn't worry about me.
