The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

Ain't that the truth!?! Every year it's something else

I just keep telling myself, this is my last year and not sweat things. You may have to remind me I said that at some point this summer :p

So Cap, what are you up to today?
I am holding my breath. Poults hatching, chicks due, and we had a thunderstorm so i was worried we might lose power.
How are you today, NFC?

Afternoon everyone! :frow

Spent all night patrolling my pens...got a predator trying to get in my pens. Extremely smart one, avoiding traps, George and me. I think it's a fox? Torn a huge hole in one pen grabbed a Bianchi rooster, no blood and only a few feathers. Maybe tonight I'll get it.
:fl
What kind of wire did it tear through? I hate to hear about that happening.

Very sorry for your loss Sean!! Hope you can catch him!!

We too have a fox that keeps bugging the chickens. He comes around every 2-3 days I would say, sometimes more often the past few weeks to a month or so. And he has been jumping up on top of their run and scaring the living daylights out of them. We couldn’t figure out how he was getting up there until we witnessed it one day. He jumps on top of the little box my dad made around the ramp and then jumps up from that on top of the run.

Our run is a chain link dog kennel so we didn’t really know how to directly attach it to the coop so instead what we did was we just added a ramp from the coop to the run and then my dad built a wood framed hardware cloth box around the ramp and we cut a hole in the fence to attach it to the run and hardware cloth skirt on the fence all around the hole.

We have a piece of plywood on top of the box and on top of that end of the run to protect from the rain and other elements.

So he just jumps up onto the box which isn’t too high then jumps up on top of the run. Although the box is still pretty high. Maybe at least 3 feet. The run is 6 feet tall. But the nimble little fellow doesn’t just stay on the plywood part. He goes and walks on the wire and terrifies them. We have 2x4 vinyl coated welded wire up on top to protect from predators and prevent escapees. We’ve had hawks and raccoons attempt it but never expected a fox!! He walks across it and stands up there like it’s nothing.

Bold sucker too.

All the previous foxes that used to visit would run away into the woods as soon as you even just opened the back door but this sucker you can yell at him and everything and nothing!! He usually does retreat back into the woods a bit when you do that but then he still stays there, just a little ways into the woods, pacing and watching. He only really takes off when you really get after him. Which I think is very very odd for foxes. I know the coyotes are typically extremely bold and brazen around here but I have never seen such a brazen fox.

The others also used to always try to just run laps around the run and figure out how to get in that way. Never had one jump up on top of the run before. But then we never presented an opportunity to do that before since we previously had the coop inside the run. But I still think this sucker is smart.

Thinking of putting some spikes on top of the box or run or something. Maybe that would deter it.

But foxes are definitely annoying.

This one is no exception.

I wish we had the skittish weary foxes again instead of this brazen fellow. But the girls are smart and all bunch up in the center and start making all sorts of noise; you can tell their normal bickering from their something is wrong please help, their voices change, so we run out as soon as they make the help vocalizations.
