Goes faster that way.Today has been a busy day at work.
Long story, Bruce, but aren’t they all? Turns out the kids have been in foreclosure, and with me having been so sick the last few months they opted “not to worry” us and try to take care of it. Then yesterday I got two terse messages...Kenny’s said “I don’t know what I’m going to do. The house is being auctioned off on Wednesday.” Jenny’s came at almost the same time. “I’m so scared for my girls”. What???? We headed over there immediately. Turns out they’d been behind and trying for a loan modification for a few months. The company refused to accept any payments while the process was ongoing for foreclosure. The kids kept sending required documentation for loan modification but Penny MAC kept asking for more. Friday Jenny talked to them and asked them if they’d received the latest stack of papers. They had, so then she asked what they had to do next and if they should start payments up again. They told her unless the kids paid $13,000, (yep, you read that right) there was nothing more they could do. It was too late. Then yesterday when Kenny called they told him the auction was at 10:00am on Wednesday at a bank down in Basin.
I may have missed some stuff in the retelling - it wasn’t pretty here last night with Jenny and Katie bawling like mad, Kenny alternating between pacing and almost bawling, and us trying to understand what the heck was happening. It was pretty chaotic, so I’m not guaranteeing accuracy here. One thing is for sure - Jenny had misunderstood something the Penny MAC people told her back in November. She had asked how all of this stuff works and thought she was told that since she was in regular touch with them at her caseworker’s (right term escapes me) office, she could ignore any other correspondence....that the form letters were just standard but she was dealing directly instead. That, obviously, is NOT what they said but she just put any letters, including the certified ones, in the filing cabinet - unopened. Not good. We didn’t see notices in the newspaper, but we weren’t looking for them either, and the kids don’t get the paper.
So, they both called in sick today and came here, where Jenny called Penny MAC. She put the call on speakerphone, which was awkward for all of us, but Kenny wanted to be sure that he and Jenny didn’t miss something and wanted us to hear, too. Today was the very first time they’d ever asked her about Kendra, her degree of disability, the type and duration of disability, and they asked for documentation of that and proof that Kendra's SSI had been dropped to $63.00 because of Jen’s second job. They said to fax it in and then call back at 2, and by then the modification review board might have some tentative answers. J ran home and got what they needed, Ken made copies, and then the kids faxed the stuff over. It was forever until 2:00 but finally Kenny made the call. The kids got an extension until March 16, a temporary reprieve by the board, and they will have a final decision then, but in the meantime the company will again begin accepting payments, which they’d refused to even do before. The woman Kenny was talking to sounded far more cheerful and optimistic during the second call than she had this morning. If the loan modification goes through, she said, it will almost be like they are starting fresh, although payments will increase slightly, by about $80.00, and it will extend the life of the loan. She asked them if they could make a payment by phone on Friday, something else they had not asked for before. Kenny said ”I can do it right now” but she said to wait until Friday, which gives their paperwork more time to “finally get moving through the modification pipeline”. Her words.
So we are now cautiously optimistic, the kids have learned some valuable, terrifying lessons, and it’s not as bleak as it was this morning. But we are still preparing as if they’ll be staying here for a time....we have a few extra weeks to get it all done. Personally I think they’ve lost the house, but I’m not telling them that. We just told them both that Jenny cannot be the one doing the calls and paperwork....she just doesn’t understand much of what’s said (I’ve talked about that here before) and her plate is so full with Katie, Kendra, and two jobs. Kenny needs to grow a pair and take his share of the responsibility for this too. He’s just as capable of opening and reading mail as she is. And we are paying for a credit counseling class for them. This scared the peewaddin’ out of them, but it isn't over yet. Their chances are better than they looked, but if we have to we can always throw another potato in the pot, as Ma used to say.
This house is a pit, but it’s theirs and they want to keep it. Now, aren’t you glad you asked? Yep, Blooie the drama queen is back!
