We love Germany. It's kind of like the us in the 50's-60s. Love to spend Christmas there. The people are fantastic. The food is fantastic. I learned a lot working with my friend the German Chef. And it was fun that I could teach him.

Hi Sue, where did you two live in Germany?

I was able to visit Munich for a couple weeks once and it was wonderful!

We met some of the nicest, warmest people there. The scenery was gorgeous and don't make me remember the food...omg, incredible.

I'll never forget bringing Sue home from the airport... the house frau took Sue by the arm, the girls took the kids and I was kind of tossed by the wayside. They took Sue up to bed and let me go play with the kids. The ladies made it clear that I couldn't bother her until she had a good nights sleep. Several hours later she came down the stairs looking for the kids... They were asleep in cribs in the back of the restaurant. After seeing them she was willing to eat and have dinner. That was a really emotional and fulfilling day.

Needless to say our trip to Germany this year was canceled. Who knows what the future may hold. For sure I will not be getting on an airplane in the near future.

Whew caught up late on this one thread. Probably just a million more to do. Been a crazy time for me too much away from home and too little time once I wake up every day. I hate being late

Two of my most prominent memories from our trip (there are many!)...

My Dad was still in good health when we went. Him and I went off on our own one day looking for a particular shop. Of course we got terribly lost, but Dad had such a great time wandering around and we laughed all day trying to talk to the locals to get directions. We did finally find the shop we were looking for and it was well worth getting lost over. We had one of the best, most special times together, just the 2 of us lost in Munich.

The other was very different, it was the day just my son and I took a train ride to Dachau. A totally sobering day. My son didn't know a lot about that part of history and it felt like an important thing for him to learn about. It was heartbreaking to see and it made history so real, not just something read out of a book or seen in a movie.
