Haha - all we need now is Blooie, BertS, Sour, Sunflour et al to ask him the same on alternative threads! He'll have to respond to one of us!

Excuse me while I vent for a minute. This has been bothering me for days now...maybe it shouldn't?

There's a couple we know that have had chickens and other farm animals for years. About 3 months ago the wife was telling me she needed to get more chickens...she sells eggs plus wanted to hatch some fertile eggs. I offered her 2 of mine...the 1 BA was a frequent broody and the other BA was bullying my other birds but a good layer. I was very clear to her what these 2 were like and she wanted them, especially the broody because she wanted to hatch chicks.

Last week I asked her about them and get this: "The mean one died. She was ok in the morning and dead in the afternoon"...ok, I know things can go south suddenly. When I asked her about the broody, she said, "Oh, um, ah, I gave her away, yeah, I gave her away. I'm not going to feed a chicken that doesn't lay eggs".

I think she butchered those chickens and ate them for dinner. Guess I learned a lesson...just because someone has had chickens for several years doesn't mean much.

Blimey - thats a bit below the belt! I've had similar experiences - i guess when people are not paying the going rate for something, they don't give two hoots. I've since stopped giving chickens away - I now only sell them or eat them. Funny that chickens can be ok in the morning and then dead in the afternoon (after someone has lopped their head off) - what a stroke of bad luck, I'm sure!

That's how it feels, sort of below the belt. I wouldn't have given them to her just to eat.

And what's with someone experienced with raising chickens not understanding what "broody" is about?

This all came out last week when she heard we were wanting to move. The first thing she wanted to know was what I was going to do with my chickens. Well, I sure as He11 won't be giving them to her.

People...they're the worst.

I'm with you on that Chris...I just got back from making another cup! Unfortunately, no cake to be had. Guess my apple will have to do.
