The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

Teila, I didn't know you had a dog.

Technically I do not right now .. that is Jessie who is FIL's dog. I have not had a dog for 5 years or so now since losing Charlie-Bear and up until now, haven't really wanted one. I am looking forward to having another fur baby to love.

Of course, there are going to be introductions needing to be made, Jessie to Syba, Chimee and the chookies but Jessie has an easy going temperament and we do not think there will be problems, just the usual 'what are you' type reactions

Having said that, believe me when I say that things will be taken very slowly and watched very closely .. I have read too many horror stories on BYC about dogs v chickens and to lose one of my girls that way would crush me.

It is probably a good thing that I will not be there for the integration because I would be a mess but I trust hubby and FIL and they both know how much the girls mean to me so they would not take any chances.

By the time I get up there they will all be best buds!

Good morning friends

I got the mowing done yesterday; cleaned the BBQ and sold it within an hour of posting on Gumtree; cleaned the coop and a few other bits n' pieces. Today is house work, grocery shopping and then just relaxing with the girls.

This gave me a chuckle this morning:

who eats ONLY 3 cookies?  I always start by culling the broken ones.  Then any they got too brown or not enough brown.   Followed by those that didn't get enough chips/nuts, whatever.  Pretty soon I am left with the primo ones - decide to wrap, Rubbermaid them and put in freezer.   Five minutes later decide it's stupid to waste the freezer on just a few cookies.   Then   mad that I wasted wax paper and have to clean out an empty Rubbermaid  container.

Cookies really stress me out, as do brownies, cupcakes,  pumpkin loaf  .......  Ice cream and I make the perfect match, just need a spoon and open container.  Rinse it out and hide in the trash so neighbors don't count how many  I have demolished.

Too funny!

Just some more progress pics ...

Jessie supervising again

So the end with the frame in the middle is the raised coop which is going to have a slide out, slatted timber floor, same as we have here, ideal for the climate and easy to clean. Two more sections of the run yet to go up so the end product will be the same length again. Plenty of room for 5 x spoiled bantams.

Great to see the progress Teila. Your new garden looks nice and shady for your girls. Jessie looks as hard working as our pooch!

I have a quail baby pipping. Last night I candled them (day 14 and 2/3rds) and discovered one had pipped internally! It was quite a surprise to see that little shadow beak! I'd been going to wait until the next day to put them into lock down, seeing as I'd added a few more after the initial lot went in, but that kind of bumped up my schedule! It has pipped externally this morning. The only thing I can think is that it was pretty hot day and night when I was collecting the eggs and there is no where cool in our house to store them, so I figured I'd see what happened. Quail eggs are supposed to be very hardy so perhaps all that heat got them slowly developing before I put them into the incubator. I had to add more water this morning as the humidity was a bit low so I dabbed it's pip with a damp finger just in case. Now I'm obsessively checking the temperature and humidity every now and then. It's so much easier when a chicken does this!

I'll try and get a decent photo of my Java babies today. They are so bristly with pin feathers.
