The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

I am not sure, however kidney issues are apparently very common in older cats but Syba is only 9. He apparently has small kidney/large kidney syndrome and a stone blocked the large kidney causing him to crash with Creatinine levels in the 1,800's when 400 is considered very high. He was a very sick little man very quickly.

Two days into his 'crash' the local Vet was pushing us to euthanize him but we know our boy and he was still fighting so we drove him 2 hours to a Cat Specialist who performed more tests, booked surgery at the Uni Vet [who had never done the surgery before but was prepared to give it a go] but miraculously Syba passed the stone on his own Day 5, the evening before surgery was booked and 3 days after we would have said our tearful goodbyes if we listened to the first Vet. Syba did not eat for 5 days and was on IV fluids for 8 days but we could see that he had not given up so we did not either. We are booked in for a follow up blood test in a week to check 'stable' levels.

When he came home his Creatinine was still in the 400's which has a prognosis of maybe months but the Specialist was confident that it would drop some more over a few weeks and we would then be talking years, with good management. I am optimistic as he has been home for 2 weeks now and is eating, drinking, playing with his little sister and we have seen marked improvement which is a good sign that the levels have hopefully dropped some more .. fingers crossed!

Now I just have to sell one of my kidneys on the black market to pay for it all! :lau
I believe in cats stone formation has to do with decreased water intake. Another reason cats should get wet food daily. That's my understanding anyways.

Yeah, I am researching as much as I can about chronic kidney disease in cats now, but 3 weeks ago I knew nothing.

Syba and Chimee used to get one wet meal of an evening and had biccies available 24/7 but now Syba gets a soup for breakfast, a broth for lunch and a more meaty wet meal in the evening. Additional water containers are around the house to encourage him to drink more.

After the 'stable' blood tests he will probably have to switch to a prescription kidney diet but for now the Specialist was more interested in getting some weight back on him as he dropped rapidly from just over 7kgs [16lbs] to 5kgs [11lbs]; luckily he is a big cat.

I am not sure if I will ever be able to cuddle him again and not get angry with the first vet we took him to. Each and every day we have with him now is a blessing and the fact that we still have him is kind of surreal. It irks me that the Vet was so adament that we euthanize him and here he is now, happily curled up on my lap while I type.

I can not stress enough that we know our pets better than anyone else and if you are certain that they have not given up, do not give up on them. I can not thank the Specialist enough and his believing in Syba and us and organising the surgery gave Syba the extra time he needed to pass the stone on his own. The Specialist was as excited as we were that it happened and mentioned that he had never seen a cat do that before with just medical treatment..our special little superhero!

My kitten was born June 1st, and weighs only 3.5 pounds. He has a condition called flat chest. If he runs a lot he gets short of breath, but he has the best personality of the whole litter. Love this little guy! 20171005_002049.jpg He is in front so he looks bigger. Mom is a small cat too.

We have a local vet that I brought my cats too and when Opie went in with 105 temp I was not impressed with her bedside manner, thankfully he survived on his own as I didn’t do any extra testing. She gave him an antibiotic and fluids. It’s amazing how fast they lose weight and hair when they are sick. Our new pup I took to a vet 30 miles from here and was very impressed with both vets she has seen there. My cats share a can of wet food in the morning otherwise they have dry food available all day and I have water in 2 spots...3 spots if we go away for the weekend.

One of our strays has made it up to the house. She shows Hurricane Hattie who is boss.

She's gorgeous, hope she has a friendly personality:)

She is beautiful!

Syba showing off his 'poodle cut gone wrong'! Due to his recent illness he had both legs shaved for IV lines, neck shaved for multiple blood tests and abdomen shaved for ultrasounds.

Glad Syba is doing well. It bothers us more than the cats for the unique haircuts.

Still pleased to have me back?? ;)

She is friendly but won’t let us pick her up. She’s a Ferral cat so I’m impressed she hangs around. Hubby is her favorite as he has fed them all summer long. We’ve named her Sassy. When Bear our big dog was in good shape that cat would not be alive. Thank goodness Hattie and the out door cats are growing up together.

She looks well fed and healthier than most "strays" - your DH is doing a great job.
