Some people are really strange - not any of us of course. One of the bus ladies had a Maltese because she loved the flowing white coat. First thing she did was have it shaved down and continued to do so. Didn't want to have to bother with grooming. Also felt dogs were filthy and bathed the dog EVERY day. Neatness freak going.

She had a 3 level small condo and told me she had a dog crate on each floor, so the dog could be with her (always in a crate tho). I asked if she ever played with her dog. NOPE but, the dog had her own room with toys. I told her dogs want to be with humans.

Lady said she tried having her on the couch(on towels) while watching TV. However,dog kept barking at TV so she put her in a crate with a towel over it so it didn't see the TV.
Told her the dog barked at the TV because she didn't get out and see what the world was like. She barked because it was strange to her.

Never got anywhere with her. Then she told me she didn't take the dog out for a walk because a coyote could get her. Her area has over 500 condos in the development. Very little grass and trees. Lots of residents walking their dogs (on leash) daily - no problems. She put piddle pads on the floor and the dog was supposed to do her business there and no where else.

Poor dog died at an early age from??? what disease - she never said. But lady was in mourning for a lengthy time. I figured the poor dog was finally free. Luckily she hasn't gotten another dog. She requested her kids get her a Yorkie pup. Thankfully they didn't do so.

Weird, is all I can think of. I met the little dog once, was surprised to see how outgoing , sweet and lovable she was despite her owner. Just very sad.

When I took over a rental property many years ago it was by reference from an acquaintance who was moving out. Not long after moving in, I spent many weeks treating Charlie-Bear for ticks and fleas which I did manage to get under control.

I bumped into said acquaintance down the street one day and we were chatting about dogs and she quite proudly mentioned that she had not taken either of her dogs to the Vet's for many, many years.

She genuinely believed that that was something to be proud of because her dogs had not needed a vet visit.

Besides the fleas and ticks .. what about health checks? Dental checks? Vaccinations?

Sounds like my crazy great aunt who is a vegetarian, so, when she got herself a Bichon she fed him only vegetarian food too. That poor dog was always a matted mess and sadly didn't live a long life. I felt so sorry for that dog.

But folks are also not caring for human children ....we have had numerous "forget" them in hot cars ...now how could anyone forget a baby in a car?? Betcha they don't forget their smart phones.

I couldn't agree with you more! Our kids know the animals come first because they are relying on us 100% for their survival. Then it's their turn.

I'm just thankful that this site attracts people who want to take the best care of their animals that they can.

One of the first dogs I had was named Honey! My folks gave her to me when I was about 12. She was a teeny little chihuahua that thought she was the biggest dog on the block.

J, it sounds like you have the perfect toy for your Honey!

Our Honey has honey coloured eyes which is why our DD chose that name. She's a sweet dog so she's lived up to her name. Chihuahua are big dogs stuck in teeny bodies!

A question I often ask...I know 2 ladies involved in animal rescue and rehoming them...almost all the animals they foster are so sweet and thank goodness thru their organizations they find loving homes.

But folks are also not caring for human children ....we have had numerous "forget" them in hot cars ...now how could anyone forget a baby in a car?? Betcha they don't forget their smart phones.

You make an excellent point about human kids sunflour. When I hear stories like the forgotten baby, I figure it's another example of the "me first" syndrome, some parents aren't grown up enough to put the child first.

Thank goodness for people that do animal fostering and rescues. I have a cousin in OR that does that with grayhounds. She's devoted years to finding homes for retired race dogs and has placed 100's of them.

I just went out and covered my veggies. Not sure why i bother but i hate to see them die! I wonder how long they can last. Our average freeze date is Oct. 20 so i am feeling good to have gotten this far.

So, I have an update on Coffy. While she was not known to the AC guy who picked her up, this was apparently her third trip to the pound and sadly, she has not yet been picked up this time. She is not registered with Council but her owner advised Council that that is because she does not live here but lives 2 hours away and is only visiting. However, Coffy first became known to Council two months ago, long visit apparently

The owner has been in dispute with the Council because she believes they are “picking on her”.

I will try not to wear out the soap box by overuse but really? You do not keep your dog under control and because it is found running the streets, exhausted and panicked, the fact that it ends up at the pound is your being “picked on”?

If the dog was contained, you would not be being “picked on”.

The ‘just visiting’ could be an excuse for not having registered the dog or it could be true. If it is true, no wonder poor Coffy is running around the village lost and confused, she does not know where she lives.

I am sorry, but I have no empathy for the owner on this occasion. I do, however, feel very sorry for Coffy and hope there is a happy ending for her. I feel bad that she may not get picked up by her owner this time because there will be more pound fees and most likely a fine.

While not the perfect solution, if your dog keeps escaping and you do not want to keep having to pay to break her out of the pound or crossing paths with animal control, would it not be common sense to put a tag on her with your phone number on it so anyone finding her would ring you not AC?

Anyways, the AC guys have said that they will keep hubby in the loop so I will at least hear how Coffy is doing and what the outcome is.

@Teila what a sad situation for poor Coffy. If it becomes possible for her to be adopted, I hope someone that really cares for her will give her a good home.

No empathy for the owner here either. The dog is the one paying the consequences for the owner being irresponsible.

Poor Coffy! Why do people get an animal if they aren't going to look after it properly?! Would it be so difficult to keep her inside? Or at least on a chain so the poor thing doesn't go wandering and lose her way? You're right - that's quite a holiday and surely if she was being a responsible owner and taking her for walks Coffy would get to know the neighbourhood and know her way home if she did get out?! Not that she should be wandering about on her own. I agree... Grrrr! Picked on! What rubbish!

I hope that dog finds a better home.

And if she truly loved the dog, she should be willing to pay whatever to get him back (unless it was like thousands) BUT on the same note, if she really loved the dog, she would never let the dog get out in the first place! Once is an accident, I can see it happening. Twice, well, maybe you just have an escape artist dog. But three times is a choice. You're choosing not to care. Or to cheap to pay for proper containment measures.

I hope that dog finds a better home and owner.

UGH YES!! How the heck do you "forget" a kid!? Or even leave them in the car for "just a minute"??? I mean, some times my parents would do that if they were only going to the bank or something and would park right in front BUT we were pretty old by then and knew how to lock and unlock the car. I would never leave a baby or child young enough for a car seat in the car. I mean, I probably wouldn't leave any kid in the car, but still. And especially, how do you go in "for a minute" and then forget the kid for like an hour!?!?!?

I understand that sometimes it can be a pain to take the kid in and out of the seat for short trips but so then either DON'T TAKE THE KID WITH YOU or take them in every time.

Wow that story is SO SAD. Might as well have gotten a stuffed dog.... I want to know how she was so neat with a dog but had kids????? If she treated the dog like that, poor kids.....

Well some people do give their own vaccines or believe in no vaccine or minimal but to never have a checkup? How do you know if the dog is healthy if it's never been examined? What about worms etc?

Lions sleep because they hunt at night and it's too hot during the day to do much else for such a big cat! OMG!

Our girl is raw fed. There's a chain of stores throughout Auckland that has everything you need and the people that work there all have a background in vet nursing so they know what they are talking about, unlike the normal vet who wants to push the expensive biscuit food and tries to tell you raw feeding is so bad/dangerous for your dog. Honey never smells, her teeth are clean, she's in great condition, and chewing up a big meaty bone is very satisfying for her. There's a lot less that comes out the other end too. We puppy sat a biscuit fed pup and, oh my goodness, I'd forgotten how much and how smelly the poop is!
