The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

Every dog is different. I have a friend who had golden retrievers. Every time i was there, the dog was dying to play. My friend lives alone and works long hours. A sad way for an energetic dog to live.
I had Belgians and they were quite laid back but they were not Malinois.

Yeah, if I worked I don't think I would get an energetic dog. My brother and his girlfriend want an Aussie but they both work full time plus he's kind of.. aggressive with discipline and inconsistent and i think Aussies are more sensitive dogs. But I guess she had one before and loves how smart and sweet they are. Which is great but I don't think it'd be happy hanging out. And I mean, they are very active people, always biking and hiking and skiing and stuff, but like I said, they also work, so not sure what the dog would do during the day. Plus I kinda think they need a job, whether that's tricks or a sport or something. I don't think it'd like just sitting. Plus I think they're protective? And they have lots of friends. But she wants a dog for when my brother goes away for 5 weeks next January or February.

Anyway, I don't work so have the time but right now I am in school so I'd wait till I graduated and/or moved out.

Oh and about Belgians. Yeah, I think the other ones are calmer because they aren't bred for work like the Malinois. I mean, they maybe are a little but not the intense work and military stuff like the Mal.

My Mum's friend had the most gorgeous cocker spaniel called Toffee (he was toffee coloured). He was so sweet and gentle.

Springer spaniels are a bit nuts!

I'd never heard of rage syndrome (so I did a search for info). Sounds like true cases are very rare. But it would be heartbreaking to have your beloved dog end up like that and have no way to make them better.

Yeah, it would be really sad to end up with a dog like that. :(

Most of the cockers i encountered while grooming dogs really hated their nails cut, so much so the owners were often afraid to cut them for fear of being bitten. Cockers were never a favorite of mine ( sorry DD). Springers seemed always happy to see everyone and never gave me much trouble. But any hunting or herding dog is going to need lots of exercise.

Yeah, Gator hates having his nails cut. He needs to have them done though so we have to find someone I guess. It's been a long time.

And aw yeah, the Springers seem so happy go lucky all the time haha

And yeah, that's true. Just hopefully not as crazy intense as a Mal.

We have a huge yard too so they can run around and get plenty of exercise even without being worked with or walked. Though of course I would walk them and train them a lot too but the yard is huge.

I've seen some people say being in the yard isn't enough/doesn't count as exercise but I think they must be talking about tiny city yards lol

Some years ago my sister wanted to replace her Cocker that had passed away. I recommended a friend of mine in another state. The puppy was beautiful but in less than 10 minutes of being in the house, she came over to me for attention. I went to pet her and she bit me(not a play bite). Next second she was fine. I told my sister to send the dog back. She didn't want to. The next day she called and said she was sending the dog back, it had done the same thing to her daughter.

Somewhat later I thought I'd get a male to keep involved in the breed- as my stud was elderly& my girls were too old to breed again. The pup did the same thing as the one my sister had. Was all excited for attention and then bit me hard. Same thing, next second happy, loving puppy. He got returned and the breeder (who I had known for many years) was furious and said I was crazy. Well when she took the lead she had him as far from her body as she could get. WHY?? If I was crazy??

Interestingly when I checked out the pedigree on the one my sister sent back and the One I took back - and female line was the same . The line from the woman who said I was nuts. I had never seen that behavior in Cockers before . She lost no time in selling him to someone in another state.

Penny can tell you what some dog people are like, I decided I didn't need contact with any of them. I just had my oldies live out their lives and enjoyed them as house dogs.

Wow that's sad, sorry. :(

But it's also frustrating that they didn't seem to care! So has the problem gotten worse or are breeders working on it now? Maybe it was a new thing then? But still, to be so irresponsible as to ignore it and resell him...

Does your dog chew stuff? I know ours is still a pup at 8.5 months but she chews everything. She has toys which she plays with but when we were gone the other day she chewed both garage door sensors. :barnieI wish we hadn’t had to put our old dog down as he was really good for her.

Pups can definitely be destructive hah

Maybe she needs just a tad bit more exercise or even some sort of mental stimulation? Like tricks or a game/puzzle or something.

Though of course puppies are also just crazy ha

And sorry about your other dog. :(

I think I've got a dying pig :(

Aww sorry. :(

Luna is looking extra cute today.

Even with 13 acres, our shepherd just waits by the door mat. She doesn't just run around getting exercise. Maybe if we had another big dog....

Wow really? Weird. But then again, Shepherds are more family/owner oriented dogs, right? And slightly protective? So maybe she just would prefer to be doing activities and stuff with her owners than off by herself plus doesn't want to leave you guys.

But I guess I meant also like I could just play ball/fetch in the yard or recall drills or something involving lots of running ha

That's true doesn't matter how big a yard you have - a dog alone will end up sitting by the door. Dogs are flock animals too except they think their humans are flock members. They want to know why you put them outside while you stay inside, probably eating behind their backs.

Cap I don't mind you telling experiences you'd had with Cockers. I mainly worked with show dogs and they are taught in the whelping pen that I will work on them, trimming faces etc. at 10 days. Pet dogs, mainly spoiled because their owners say the dog doesn't like this or that. Actually they are relieved to have an excuse. I tell them they have to be alpha. That doesn't mean hitting. It means keeping at it, until they realize resistance is futile.
