Lost the eggs.
Totally out of firewood and I totally drained the solar batteries running an electric heater. Sitting here freezing with no power. It's 38F in here right now.

Gold fish can overwinter in a pond if it is deep enough. If you do make a pond, don't slope the bottom at an angle, have sort of steps...shallow area, drop down, flat area, drop down. Its too hard to walk in a pond with a sloping bottom. My pond was 1 foot deep in the shallow end and three feet in the deep end, but that was FL so no freezing. 14'x14' . Took me a long time to dig it!

Thanks for the info! I wasn't planning to make it slope, thinking of putting it in a flat part of the yard, but the step thing is a good idea. And wow that's a big pond! I'm probably thinking a similar size though.

And actually I think I somewhat am thinking a slope. I have two ideas.

One is just a big hole in a flat part of the yard. Kind of ugly but I could probably landscape it. The other one is there's this hill in the backyard and I was thinking of like waterfalls down it. That's my mom's idea actually haha

Mean is usually what is asked for when asked for an average. Median and mode are also averages though. Median is the number in the exact middle and mode is the one most often.

You definitely need a pump and filter unless you want a stagnant mess. You can put bubblers in to keep the water aerated which will help but with no water running through the pond, it will still get nasty unless it is filtered.

As for depth, if you aren't going to keep the goldfish in it over the winter, I would think (with no actual knowledge!) 3' would be OK.

I think I'll probably go with 3 feet then or maybe slightly deeper or shallower in some areas?

Or I could get a deicer?

If you plan to dig a pond, near trees is a bad idea. First of all, lots of leaves get in the water. Second, if you are digging you will hit a lot of roots.
I guess i will be inside most of the day. The weather is going to be rain or snow.

That's a good point, I hadn't thought of that.

Aaaw, thanks Deb, it is a labour of love!

Yep, we are getting closer to winter so temps not so high and more importantly, not so humid.

I have been chipping away at the palms on the other side of the gate after work and got two and a bit done. It is amazing how much more roomy it makes the garden look; less jungle, more garden! Also, less undergrowth and shady thickness for the mosquitoes to hide in This section is behind the girls so they will also probably be more appreciative of a bit more light coming through and less mosquitoes.

Also, just wanted to share one of one of the ponds .. I am really pleased with how they are going It took quite some time to get the set up right but looks like it was worth it .. the water is so clear! Lots of little guppies everywhere!

Personally, I would not say they are expensive to build per say; if you can make your own, it would probably be quite cheap for the basic pond but then you need to have the pump and filter etc. If you want it to be more of a water feature with falling water etc, like ours, then you have to consider the additional construction costs there. Our pump/filter is solar powered so it basically runs when the sun is out which is great for here, not so much in some other places.

People have stuck bath tubs or other such like in the ground and turned them in to very nice ponds .... Google has some awesome bath tub pond images.
