The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

Here we're supposedly in Zone 4b...but we have this annoying micro-climate so the charts just don't apply accurately.

Okay, guys, I dunno whether to laugh or cry. I wanted to record a little video just before Jenny came to pick up Kendra, but my stupid smart phone said it was full. Huh? There's only 1771 photos and 221 videos on that thing, how can it be full? So after Jenny left I decided to go through them and transfer some, delete others. Things were going fine - then I ran into this little gem. I think it was probably taken in 2016, because she has a set of braces on and her hair was long enough for braids. Anyway, it's a short one - she was standing in the doorway watching the chickens. Something tickled her - just listen to her. The video made me giggle along, but then it hit me how much she enjoyed watching them. Man, do I miss the interaction of the kids with the chickens!

Edited to add: You know, I never caught this before but when she turns to me and says it's cold, do you hear her say "Walk walk, it's cold" or is that wishful thinking on my part? I sure missed hearing it before!

That stinks about the microclimate thing! :/ is it at least still somewhat in the same range as the chart or totally different? Cause I've noticed on a lot of my seed packets or for fruit trees it'll say a pretty big range.

Although knowing now how many zones there are 2-8 like a lot say doesn't seem like a very big range.

And awww adorable video!

She definitely says that! And says cold a lot of other times.

She seems very talkative here too!

I'm not sure how she was before or now cause I haven't been on this thread that long I don't think but do you think the chickens made her more talkative?

I know they say sometimes animals can do that.

My friend's family got a dog around 5 years ago and her sister is way more talkative and mature I feel like. They now have two dogs. She's (the sister) autistic. Part of that I'm sure is just age and that she's been taking college classes and public speaking and stuff (also has epilepsy) but still. Besides, I feel like all that's kinda been within the last 5 or less years anyway so maybe dogs give confidence too.

Sorry, rambling

Adorable video Blooie! I love that chuckle! Yep, it does sound like she says “walk, walk, it’s cold” and I thought heard an “I’m cold” before that. Was that a rooster imitation I heard at the beginning?

The ‘ants off’ tray has received the ultimate seal of approval ;)

Glad to see that, and if it works as well as it looks like it is that might be a great solution!

You know, she did make a rooster crow at the beginning, and she does say "I'm cold" or "It's cold". My hearing is so bad that if I can't see her face I probably miss a lot of things. I only caught the words clearly today because I can turn up the volume on my computer to hear it better. Doggone it! And every time she speaks it is such a gift - hate thinking that I've missed some of those along the way.

Kelsey, Kendra has Spina Bifida and Autism, along with bowel and bladder dysfunction, seizures, and has been diagnosed with "Global Developmental Delay", which is the current politically correct term for what used to be called "mentally retarded". Horse hockey! That kid is no more "retarded" than most of us in some way or another - she just learns differently. She learns things "out of order", but learn them she does!

We know the chickens made a world of difference for her and for her big sister Katie. I wrote an article about kids with disabilities raising chickens -- based entirely on our experiences with both.

I know what jalousie windows are - we have one in the bathroom. But one of the panes got cracked - don't know how. And there was rubber edging on the bottom of each pane so it would close tightly. Well after many years the rubber dried up and fell off. So - bugs get in like crazy. Plus the screen behind it all tore.

I can't hear very well either, Blooie but I definitively heard her say I'm cold and walk walk I'm cold!:thumbsup

Edited to add:
Listend to it again. The best I can make out what she said is, 1st: Owee I'm cold, then either Window, Wendale, or Lindale, I assume that's the chickens name? Then again I hear Yahwee, uhuh that's chicken, walk, walk I'm cold! Then either, I stay cold or I say cold or it's cold? hard to hear exactly which one it was! I think she expresses herself purdy good!:clap

I heard what you heard Teila.

Good morning everyone!

@Blooie thanks for sharing the video, don't remember seeing that one before. What a cute giggle she has!

@JaeG pretty Tui bird, nice to see pictures.

@Teila good deal on the anti-ant platform thing.

@KDOGG331 good pictures on you in the coop :D

@CapricornFarm already said it once today but it's worth repeating...glad everything worked out ok!

@rjohns39 glad you didn't have to do the overtime, you've earned a break!

Woke up to 26* this morning, brrr!

Lol, the only reason I even knew to use that term is because I happened to be reading a BYC thread not too long ago where someone was using them for their coop :D
Shhh shhh.gif
Let us keep thinking you've got one of the fullest vocabularies we know.

Omg! That laugh! So infectious.
She definitely said walk while reaching back to take your hand.
What a beautiful little girl she is. :love
