The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

I hope you enjoy the music as much as I did back when I could enjoy music. Oh, I still can somewhat, if I'm sitting in the house. But we haven't had a radio or CD going in the cars for 7 years now, and likely never will. I don't watch TV anymore either - the always increase the intensity of the music to enhance the emotions being portrayed, the dialog disappears for me, and it's like fingernails across a blackboard. I just can't take it. Probably why any TV I watch is mostly cooking shows and such.

9/11. We had Jamie and Little Diane then. They were ready for school and I was in the bathroom getting ready for work. Ken came in and said, "You'd better come out here." The TV was on, showing the events as they were unfolding. We didn't see or hear the clocks ticking the minutes away and time ceased to exist. We were glued to the set in total shock, forgetting about schedules and obligations. Little Diane was crying hard. When the second plane hit, she threw herself into my arms and kept saying, "I don't understand, Gramma....I don't understand!" Late the next afternoon Ken got a call from Fleet Command. He was retired from the Navy, true, but the way it works is that as an officer, he was considered Fleet Reserve and was subject to emergency recall until he turned 65. At that point, they were just verifying his current residence and physical status - had he lost his eyesight, was he under care for cancers, heart issues, kidney disease or any other condition that would impede his abilities to be recalled? He probably wouldn't have done anything more strenuous than pushing papers in an office to free up younger, active duty personnel, but it was still worrisome.

Looks like I'll get to go to the ceremony today after all. Tam is here to keep the girls and watch Fiona, so that frees me up to attend. Yayyy!! Of course, Tam worked the last 3 days of 12 hour overnights, so I won't be hanging around after Ken speaks, but at least I'll get to go!

@Blooie so glad you get to go to the ceremony today! Can you share a bit of Ken's speech with us so we can read what you wrote?

P.S. I still have that Auld Lang Syne song stuck in my head from yesterday...a beautifully haunting ear worm. I ordered a Christmas CD just to get that song plus another CD, their 20th anniversary album. Can't wait!

I was working for the State (TCEQ) when 911 occurred. I was at one of the air monitoring stations at Camp Bullis, San Antonio, Tx.
They locked down the base, no one in or out. I was there until 7pm that day. Armed MP's came to the station I was at and escorted me to the command center.
Every civilian was ushered into the base command center. We watched it all happening on several monitors and tv's they had in the center, plus, heard all the radio traffic as well. Quite the experince, wasn't anything funny about it.
