The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

My dad's family are alcoholics. They're still functioning and work though so I'm not entirely sure if they are or not but they're like always drinking even during day I feel like and my cousins all kinda failed to launch.
They are. "Normal" people don't drink all day. A drink or two max in the evening, most "normal" people don't drink even every day. Many alcoholics can function, I once had an office mate that was drinking 12 beers a night but was fine in the morning. I didn't know he had a problem until he quit drinking and told me. I worked with another guy who was similarly "unaffected" during the day but after he died of cirrhosis of the liver at about 35 years old, I heard he drank like a fish after work every day. Likely hit it hard on weekends too.

I don't drink because I don't want to end up like my mother or my cousins and plus I don't like alcohol.
The first reason is the best one! I think anyone with a close family member who is an alcoholic should make the decision to never drink alcohol. You don't know if you will have the addictive "gene" until you start having problems and then it is often too late or really hard to stop. As my step-father said "there are no cured alcoholics, only non drinking alcoholics". He was one of the latter.

Found a potato plant growing in the compost pile today LOL
Plant it!

Good morning all!

The luncheon was a hit yesterday, people went away full & happy and that's what pushes me on to keep doing what I can. It was a long day (13.5 hours) and I'm one sore puppy this morning but feel good about it overall.

As for the employee situation, it's like what Blooie says, "lives in an extremely unpopulated area and it’s hard enough to find warm bodies, let alone bodies who will step up to the plate, do their jobs, and leave their personal baggage at home." And anyone worth their salt already has a good full-time job with benefits. The golf course is seasonal work, hourly wages, no benefits (other than free golf and 1/2 cost meals). Hard to compete for decent people.

The whole drinking thing came as a surprise to us when we moved here. Sure there are people everywhere that have that issue but it's pervasive here. We're the odd ones because while we may have a glass of wine or one drink (about every 4-5 months), we don't partake on a regular basis. People can't figure us out. It's twisted to think we're the weird ones.

DH and I have been concerned about liability to the course (and personally, for us) if there's a serious traffic accident because of someone drinking too much at the course. Most people that come out here live at least 15 miles away and they drive home on I-80. When DH brought it up to our advisory board, the whole reaction was :idunno, what's the big deal, it's normal to get drunk when you're having a good time. End of discussion.

As someone who's grandfather was killed by a drunk driver, I find the lack of responsibility and concern appalling.

Sorry for the long post. You may all now return to your regularly scheduled program!

You aren't going with the flow (of booze)! There is definitely a "we are in the same herd" mentality no matter where you live. Might be how people dress, how they talk, what sort of vehicles are common. If you aren't in that herd, you are looked upon with suspicion.

:thI don't know about "there" but "here" the bartenders are supposed to keep an eye out for people who are overdoing it and cut them off. I don't know if there is any legal liability on them though.

I kinda figure if you are having a good time, you might want to remember having a good time. Getting drunk sort of negates that.

Yeah, probably true. I'm not sure if it's all day, might start around 5, but definitely every day I think. My aunt still works, my uncle retired. They're both teachers so I'm not sure they drank much during day but now they do sometimes i think and at parties on holidays we always go over very early like noon or 2 and people already are and drink until night when we leave and wow that's sad :/

That's very true! I think I unfortunately have the addiction thing in other ways. Definitely addicted to my phone and also sugar/junk food, and I spend like my mother, and of course the SH I used to do which I'm not really sure if that counts as an addiction or not but I couldn't stop so yeah. So I gotta be careful and just better not to drink and find out.

So I should dig it out or leave it? I was told to put something around it and bury it deeper?

Wow I can't believe how unconcerned they were!!

Exactly how I feel! And if you need alcohol to have a good time, there's a problem. So many young people seem to always drink when they hang out with friends or like the activities seem centered around alcohol like let's go to a bar or do this or whatever and it's like why? Why not have fun without alcohol? Let's go bowling or to a zoo or somewhere kinda lame it's fun lol

Also at concerts especially the bigger ones, everyone always gets wasted and I'm like why? I'd rather enjoy the music and be able to remember it later (not that I remember much anyway) and you kinda have to be sober for both those
