Just remembered another "map" story.

When the boys were young and I was still married to the future ex, we went on a long trip. He got terribly lost in NM and had to finally go into a gas station to ask for directions. As he was walking away from the car, the boys & I about died laughing...he was wearing a t-shirt that "Maps? Real men don't need maps!" He was less than amused when he found out what we were laughing about. :gig

Down here, Especially in certain counties, the definition of a "Road" is not what most people would think qualify. My Garmin was more than happy to put me on one while I was house hunting. It started out paved, went to gravel and then dirt & mud. It was definitely a white knuckle trip at 1mph. Yup a paper map is a wonderful thing.

Are you sure you were in TN? That sounds like most of the roads around where we lived in FL.
 
I use Google Maps a lot, supposedly "the best" but it is wrong a lot! Or just says stupid stuff. Takes you on all sorts of backroads and stuff when sometimes there is a main road right there. Can't imagine how bad it is when we DON'T know the area. I keep telling my Mom oh Google's great and my dad uses it too but she's always saying how terrible it is and still prefers maps and I gotta say I'm obliged to agree now. Takes you the DUMBEST ways. All to save like 1 or 2 minutes. One time we got lost like 20 ninutes cause it kept saying to go this one way and these backroads and stuff in NH but we finally figured it out. I actually bought a 2018 road atlas book at a book store in Maine but I haven't used it yet. I want to go on a road trip though so maybe. It is useful to show unknown stuff. I will say though that I think Google and that stuff is good for when you are driving and can't look at a map cause it talks but sometimes you don't even really need a map, just stay on the highways lol I will also say, and maybe this is only because I am young, but maps confuse me sometimes. Like a lot of them are SO detailed now that it can be really hard to read and find anything and is really confusing. The atlas I got is like that. But it is good. It is separated by state but even within states, they zoom in on certain areas and have boxes or whole separate pages. Like for NYC and stuff. Usually the more popular areas. I love it and it is fun to read but I just hope I have the chance to use it.
 
Did a little adventuring lol mostly knew the roads but went a little further than I wanted but I got back. No maps or GPS. I almost had to use the GPS a couple times cause Massachusetts sucks and doesn't have many signs in some places they really should but I guessed and got it right both times lol and by then I was somewhere familiar. I also meant to pull over and get the atlas out a few times but I forgot lol but oh well. Forgot how much cool stuff there is so close.
