The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

The existing bathroom is pretty good sized but strange layout and it's ugly! The walls were painted a baby-poo brown, there's white paint on several parts of the tub and nice (not!) big hole in the wall by the stool.

We're going to create a 1/2 bath by taking part of the existing bathroom and combine it with the current hall closet to make room for it. The hall closet can be moved to the opposite side of the hallway so that's not lost. Where the tub/stool/vanity is now we'll replace all that and make it a private master bath (which means opening up a wall in the master to make a door to it).

Sounds like a plan, but a lot of work!

What is up with baby poo brown these days? Our kitchen cabinets were that color when we bought our place, not at all appetizing. We painted the kitchen before we moved in.

I agree, it is a totally gross color! I thought maybe whoever got the paint went with an "oops" special at the paint store. But maybe they did pick it intentionally...they picked out the same color of tile for around the tub. :sick

I guess when this house was built in the '50's people were tougher and didn't expect the houses to be kept as warm as summer
Or only used it as a summer home and no A/C? Without insulation it doesn't matter if you want the winter temp same as summer or figure cooler is OK, it is still an energy sucking hog which means a wallet emptying hog ;)

All of the rooms except the kitchen have the original hardwood floors, they'll look great once they're sanded and re-stained.
Consider NOT staining the hardwood. Lighter floors make the rooms feel larger.

In the kitchen someone at some time covered the wood floors with a cheap laminate flooring (and they're damaged) so that's going to be removed and we'll put tile down.
I have tile only in the bathrooms and the mud room. Hardwood everywhere else. Same at the old house so 28 years of hardwood kitchen floors, no issues.

Careful if it is in one of the bearing walls, it will mean more support is needed above the header. Which you probably already know.

Heating fuel was cheaper back in those days too. No worries, it's getting done now.

We aren't going to stain the floors dark, they'll be the same warm brown they (mostly) already are. There are areas when area rugs were on the floor for long periods of time and those areas stick out like a sore thumb. We want to even out the color.

Hey Michelle, right now our houses look the same! :gig

Good progress for a day and a half, hope you're not too sore this morning.
Not only are we twins, our houses are too ;)

Sadly, I'm not doing any of the work, other than removing some of the trim boards.

I did go into the city and order flooring for the kitchen and bath yesterday.

I do as much as I can. That first day when we removed the drywall from the kitchen, I helped tear that down and clean up the mess. One day of that work equaled about 5 days of recovery  That's when I started developing my trim removal expertise!

It's hard, physical work for sure! What you did with the flooring helps, that can keep things moving along.
