I still have to wonder just what is going on with those air to air heat pump houses. NZ $1,200 a month to run them still seems way out of line especially considering your electric cost is 1/10th that. And where you live they aren't even trying to force heat out of super cold air.

Those geothermal ones sound really interesting. Power prices do seem to be high here, no matter which provider you go with. Then there's the lines company adding their fee which seems to creep up regularly. :hmm

Temps need to be in a certain range for heat pumps to work. Too hot or too cold is expensive for regular ones

I doubt my electric bill would be as high as it is if the house didn't have the main body of the house with cathedral ceilings 22' high, and a loft in another part.
ETA - another thing is ceiling fans, their in every room. They really cut down on the use of ac and heat.

We have high ceilings in the down stairs and the master bathroom. Not 22 feet though.
