The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

I can’t possibly catch up. Started to, but keep getting interrupted. Sorry! Did see the photos, Debby....just something about a sailor in uniform that sets my pulse racing!

That old Singer could be worth something or nothing. If you can, check the serial number. It should be on the front flat plate on the left of the needle. Then go to Singer’s website. You can usually type that number in and get an approximate date on date and place of manufacture. I dated all three of my Featherweights, my Singer Treadle, and my super old Singer electric that way. Value with the older machines is relative. It just depends on what someone is willing to pay. My older machines can out-seam my Elena Quilter’s Dream or Katie’s Brother machine hands down. Machines that could zig-zag, even older ones, drop the needle into the fabric angled just a teeny little hair , so the stitches, under a magnifying glass, can be seen to have a slight slant to them. Old machines without zig-zag sew straight as an arrow with no deviation at all. Probably just useless tidbits of information but I think that’s why seams sewn with my older machines are actually stronger.

Some came with electric motors, others were treadle machines retrofitted with the motors later. My electric was manufactured with the motor.

Getting ready for chicks to arrive tomorrow. Kinda dreading it but looking forward to it at the same time. Kendra and Katie will flip out!

Swapped freezers with a Kenny and Jenny today. They had a small chest freezer and we had a big upright. Made no sense - theirs was bulging because it’s so small but there’s four of them to feed, and I had 2 totally empty shelves in mine for me and Ken. Duh!! Ton of flippin’ work though....Kenny, Ken and I did all the emptying, cleaning, swapping, reinstalling and refilling. Fortunately neither freezer was off for very long so we didn’t have to worry about the food defrosting or the freezers needing hours and hours to cool back down. When I got all done that little freezer was so nice and full I felt rich for a few minutes there!
i love my freezers, yes, freezers, only have two medium sized freezers now (both chest packed full) and wouldn't do without them, but then altho just husband and myself and the dogs, i like have the food on hand just in case something happens, one freezer is full of nothing but a beef, the other has some beef, and vegetables, and that doesn't include the freezers on the four refrigerators, yes i have four refrigerators , what can i say, i like to cook even if i'm not a fancy cook, just a "farm" wife type, so blooie, be proud of your freezer.

Peppers tend to like their roots a little warmer than the temperature in the soil, Kelsey, unlike many container grown plants which suffer when the sides of the pots get hot. If I’m going to grow veggies, the peppers and the Minnesota Midgets are usually in pots while the rest of the veggies are grown in the garden.
shush blooie, don't let my peppers hear you, mine are so heavy with peppers that they fell over:), at least some of them, will have to take a picture and show y'all. i planted my hot peppers at the beginning of the garden and my sweets at the end(except for the corn and water melon plants) some of the peppers are much bigger than my hands and i have to wait til they ripen , not just green bell peppers but yellows, purples, reds.
i'm not trying to brag, just trying to kill time til my canner gets cooked:caf

I know the machine is from 1936 cuz the paper was in the door. I didn’t have time to get a serial number but will next time I clean, thanks.

Good grief....if I had the crops that you’ve had this year I’d be bragging up a storm! It’s a lot of work, and then all the preserving you’ve done too, so you deserve to toot your horn. Remember what my old Pappy used to say: “He who doth not tooteth his own horn oft doth not getteth his horn tootethed!!” And yes, he really did say that, often. Boy, was it fun to watch my little spell checker dude pass out while I typed it!!

I have a lot of pre-cooked or pre-prepped meals in my freezer. I always make extra whenever I can, and get it into my Food Saver bags for those hectic or lazy nights. I love to cook, so it’s no big deal to do that. The nice thing about using my Food Savers (I have 2) is that I bring a pot of water to a simmer, drop the bags of stew, chili, spaghetti sauce or whatever right in the water, and let them heat through. I’ve done that for years. Kenny buys a lot of fresh veggies at the Farmer’s Market in Cody when he gets off on Fridays, and I love how he preps his sweet corn. He just husks it, puts a few ears in his Food Saver bags with four tablespoons of butter (depending on how many ears he has in the bag) and pops them in the freezer. When he uses a bag or two he just drops the bags in water like I do. His corn is so stinkin’ fresh tasting because the corn never contacts water! The butter melts all over it and man, it’s good! He’s bringing me a couple of dozen ears tomorrow on his way home and I’m going to do that too.

He does the same basic thing with shrimp - he shells and cleans them, dries them off, and puts them in freezer bags with cracked pepper, lime juice, a little garlic power, and I can’t remember what else is in his marinade. Then he freezes them right in the marinade. When they want some, he just thaws them in the bag, takes them out and lets them drain for a few minutes, and then puts them on the grill. That way he can buy shrimp a few nice big ones at a time, and accumulate them until he has enough for a meal or two. Otherwise they simply couldn’t afford meals like that.

The Fishhawk Fire near Cody is up to over 10,000 acres and the weather shows no signs of giving anyone a break. Evacuations have started at several campgrounds and the Boy Scout Camp up there. There’s another one that just started on the west side of Yellowstone Lake in the Park. A quick prayer for the folks fighting these monsters would be greatly appreciated by them, I’m sure. Hard to breathe here today. Smoke is pretty thick.

Post pictures of your chicks Blooie!

Sometimes the date in the cabinet varies if the cabinet was purchased separately. Glad that info was a little bit helpful, anyway! ;)

I’ll post pics, for sure! BTW, I’m happy to report that the only part of the cardboard box being used for them are the strips we cut out of it to block the wires on the dog crate! :lau Planted the seed and shut up. He decided last night that the box was just too dark inside and the wire dog crate would work better. “”Oh, Sugah...You’re so CLEVAH!” Score: Blooie; a million, Ken; three.

I am going to try freezing a few bags of corn like that next year. I always wondered if it would get a cobby taste. Thanks for the tip:)
