The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

The 'white side' of my family was also on the side of the Confederacy. My great great grandfather had a huge plantation, cotton gin, and a hardware store in Brehenam, Texas. He lost everything to the Yankees when the carpetbaggers and the Union forces took or burned every thing he owned. He was a colonel in a Texas calvary unit.
After the war, they moved to what would become Ballinger, Texas. He became a well known carpenter in that area of Texas. I have a few pieces of the chairs, a table, and a 4poster bed he made around 1875. Beautiful oak and scroll work to die for! :love
hi sean
i had ancestors that fought in the war too, of course all rebels but we were "poor", never had plantations but were always hard working (altho on daddys side had a few baptist minsters) and my grandmas great, great , great grandfather came up from texas , orphan, took the last name ates for the family who took him in and raised him . i have no idea where i got the love of trees and wildlife, animals, no one else in the family does, sister says i got the love of horses from the ancestor that was hung as a horse thief:lau
but hey, thats just the way i am,

Looks great DMC! I have a few things here that need work if you'd care to come over and do them too
Thanks IM:DIt’s a lot of work and I don’t know that I’d love doing it for a living. My friend told me she’d pay top dollar to do some for her and I said no. This desk would have been in a dumpster if I hadn’t taken it home. I sent a picture of it finished to the lady I got it from and she asked if I put new handles on it. I told her no, I cleaned them. The white makes them stand out also.
Good morning everyone!

Between the awful winds and the off & on snow yesterday, my internet kept blinking out. Good thing it doesn't take much technology to read a book!

Great job on the desk DMC, love the white!

Sounds like you're creeping back to normal Sharron...just remember, baby steps! Hope you enjoy the auction today :)
Thank you Debby! Our wind is still gusting. I had to hang tightly to the steering wheel when I came home last night.
x2
my kitchen table needs to be redone, haven't had time, but maybe next spring or summer i can redo it, again, its an old set from 1955, solid red oak
Thanks Sharron! I would love to see it! I love old furniture. This same person that gave me the desk gave me an old singer sewing machine and it’s cabinet. I want to redo that also but I need to check it out first. It ran but I have to get it cleaned up and see if it will sew. Hubby put a new cord on it or he said I would have been electrocuted.
the wood is but remember, this is a working "farm" table so it has alot of cuts and scratches again now, but i still love the red oak, i have a thing for wood, i love oak of any kind, our bedroom dressers are also oak and mine is a 1910, when i bought it at a home auction, it had 5 coats of paint, even the red brass handles were painted, took me a couple of months to redo it, even the mirror is dated 1910 on the back but at the time i wasn't working so i could strip paint everyday
yep, have a thing for wood and trees:idunno
That’s what gives it character. I’d love to see your bedroom set too.
I redid this beaten up dresser a few years ago.

Yea but that's what makes them beautiful in my opinion. It has character and I love that.

I have a thing for wood and trees myself. I have an old buffet? It's from the 1920s. The top is gone but I still have the leaded glass tgat was in it. Hubs is going to hang it in the dining area and I can't bring myself to refinish this thing. It has a water mark and a couple of gashes in the top but I love it dearly.
I would love to see that too!!
My dad's biggest hobby was woodworking. He made so many beautiful tables, picture frames, bowls, candlesticks, cabinets, even toys. After he passed, my brother found a huge stash of wood dad had set aside for future projects. My brother made me a couple of little bedside tables from dad's wood. Those hold a special place in my heart.
Nice memory Debby.
Given its age, the top is probably pretty thick. I suspect you could sand out the water stain and at least some of the gashes.

Tell him what it is worth, he would at least sell it for the money.

I love wood and old wood furnishings. I have a "parlor" set that was my grandfather's. Family lore says the only reason it still exists is because it was in his furniture maker grandfather's house when the Confederates burned the wood working shop in Baltimore. All hand carved, the guy who reupholstered it a few years ago (2nd time in the life of the pieces) said you don't see a whole set very often. 1 settee, 1 arm chair, 5 other chairs. No idea what it is worth, I don't have it insured since it is irreplaceable.
Very cool!
