The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

thank you for explaining, that sounds like an interesting day, been years since i've seen a saddle shop, thats a dying breed.
as for the shopping, i usually shop on line anymore, i used to hate to go to the mall because it was the hang out of teenagers and only went when i had to , grocery shopping became my "shopping" where there were lots of people, well not lots but more than i cared for lol
I forgot to mention San Diego Has a very large horse population... I believe San Diego County has as many or more horses than Kentucky. Quite a few Race horse breeders, Sport horse Breeders, and the people who want them. though Draft horses are kind of rare. But Draft crosses are pretty common. With the premarin industry...

The premarin farms were shut down in the US because of PETA. But they just moved over to Canada. Premarin is Collected from Pregnant mare Urine. And Draft horse Mares produce a lot of it. Also the gestation is about 11 to 12 months. She spends all that time in a tie stall with a collection bag... she gets to be with her foal for about three or four months... Already bred back during the foal heat, Which happens one or two weeks after giving birth.

On a soap box again. Sorry. I hope the demand for premarin can be filled by synthetic or genetically produced. Like Insulin. They gene spliced a bacteria in order for it to produce insulin as a by product. San Diego has a large Biomed presence here...

Yep Ray Used to work for McPherson saddlery. He does saddle repairs and even shoe repairs. He also Worked on the harness for the Budweiser Clydesdales when they were in town. When I was repairing an old harness that I was using for training He was the one that I went to to order the metal parts... Conway buckles.. Chicago screws. Keepers. Though when I went to add parts to the harness I went synthetic. Biothane looks like leather but has a test strength of Nylon straps... And its Much Much lighter than leather.

My full leather Harness for Katee weighs almost as much as a western saddle without the Collar and Hames....

I miss driving and working with harness horses. I may get a stout pony and train him up so I can go get the mail down on the highway. Mail box is 2 miles away and all of that distance is dirt road. We'd just have to cross the road to get to the mail box. so some training for safety on roads with traffic would have to be done.

By stout pony probably something around 13 or 14 hands and about 900 pounds. I would love to have a Fijord but they are pretty pricey.

yes, years ago i had a half morgan and half quarter horse, bought him as a yearling, only 14.1 so, pony but built like a work horse, 5x5 he could go all day and still be fresh and i was a heavy lady
yes, the fijords are pricey but if i was able to still ride, i think i would hunt one up , theres one down here in florida for sale, or they say hes a fijord, he looks like a light colored bay, hes not pretty at all but hes young, around three - five and never been broke, just a kids pet, shame i can't ride, i need to sell my saddle so i'm not tempted lol

we still have alot of draft-work horses in pa, some of the farmers still use them like the amish, and they love to show them in the fairs, how much they can pull, a neighbor, mr cottom had them, you would see him working them in the fields prepping them for the fairs, they were so easy going and beautiful
you can adopt the premarin foals, bottle feed them, some of them are so little, don't think draft blood

I sold my Western saddle no attachment there. But I clung on to my Steubben Dressage saddle for a very long time. I finally sold it to a saddle collector. It was one of the last to be actually made in Ireland. I could do everything riding in that saddle from Dressage to Jumping to Trail riding... Loved it.

Now I have Three harnesses... and a horse that is in a retirement home. Shes 25 now. And where my house is its very difficult to find a good farrier or really Any farrier... If I packed her up once every eight weeks and took her in to Lakeside I could meet up with my favorite farrier. But that means hitching up the horse trailer and convincing my darling daughter to get in. SMH...

Thank goodness she doesnt need shoes ... They are 200 dollars for a set... including the farriers work of setting them.

Gosh its 4 am... I havent been to bed yet...

Good night

Yep I knew a few people that got non profit setups to rescue those youngsters. Teach them to be horses and eventually train them for riding or driving...

I know some of them get sold and shipped to Europe to be used for meat... Sigh.
