The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

I have some time to think about it, like maybe another 24 hours, before I fade away to nothing from starvation. I started trying to figure out how to make the introductory post without it either sounding like a pity party or a call to arms! Fine balance to make there! I’m just about there. I can’t be as wordy as usual (don’t faint). But there just has to be people out there who can offer some initial guidance, and they’d be experienced enough in all of this to understand that they’re there for suggestions, not medical dietary advice, I hope. And yep Sour, we can’t forget the dietitians and caregivers who could help, I dunno, maybe this COULD work!

I can see it now....signing in and the featured posts are photos of people livers and kidneys and nostrils and tonsils. The new posts for the day will be: Help...How Warm Does my Liver need to Be? and: I’m so Excited! My Kidneys Worked This Morning! and: My Nostril Hurts....Bumblenose? and the ever popular: Can I Feed my Tonsils Grit?

oh, man, I gotta quit posting after taking an Ambien!!

Good morning everyone!

DMC, you can keep that crazy cold weather (please don't share)!

DH had a heck of a time yesterday driving east to Cheyenne (in the snow) and then north to Casper (in the snow). Only to arrive at the house where snow continued to fall for hours. His first job of this day will be to shovel.

Okay, I've been kicking around a really weird idea all night long, and your job is to either shoot it down or tell me to go for it.

So while trying to put tonight's supper on my plate, and not having had my official meeting with the dietitian yet, I was almost in tears. (insert sympathetic sounds here) I'd made a beef roast, carrots, potatoes, and gravy, which I always cook in with the roast and veggies. I knew earlier today that I would be limited in what went on my plate, but I didn't think past that. The roast had been in the freezer and it was rapidly approaching it's "ya gotta get this thing cooked, stoopid" time. Ken had the full monte on his plate - a couple of slabs of meat, a mound of potatoes, dark gravy running down the sides, a heaping mass of carrots with butter - real butter - melting all over them, and pepper and salt.....salt....ah, salt. Mine looked pretty paltry in comparison, with one small slice of beef, an spoonful of carrots that I'd rinsed the gravy from, and.....and......well, that was it. So as usual I opened the fridge and put a handful of prewashed blueberries on my plate so the meat and carrots didn't look so lonely. Here it is now, 7:30, and I'm starving! I have fruit in the fridge - more blueberries, grapes, oranges and a couple of red grapefruit. Well, citrus is now a no-no. I had picked up the grapes for Ken and the kids, since the skins make me choke and I'm not about to stand there and peel grapes, but I'm getting about that desperate now. Oh, goodie! That leaves another handful of blueberries. The weird thing is we went to Cody to get groceries and other stuff the other day, but I wandered the aisles not knowing what I could even BUY! I did have the DaVita site up on my phone, which is what we used for Linda's shopping trips, but the diet for kidney failure (Linda) and kidney disease (me) are just different enough to make me nervous. Davita focuses on dialysis patients. But conversely Linda's kidney care was done through DaVita and I know they are the best. My diet just isn't as rigid. Sooooo, we didn't get much. Which brings me to my idea:

There are a million people on this site. For crying out loud, at least two or three of those people must be on restricted kidney diets, right? Some would be more limited than others, but the basics wouldn't be that different. What if I started a thread, something like "Eggs and Chicken on a Kidney Diet" or some such nonsense - an attention grabbing title - as a place to help each other out. I could clearly state at the get-go, and then regularly throughout the thread that the information wasn't intended to ever take the place of each person's dietitian's or physicians' advice....it was a guide for shopping, etc. Maybe someone could share how they bake bread, or someone else would have a kidney-friendly recipe for dinner - preferably one that did NOT include blueberries.

I can see all kinds of pitfalls in this idea. We are talking about people's renal health and that's a pretty serious thing. But if we have the knowledge and experience base out there, why not use it as a guideline? The last thing my nephrologist said to me was that he'd probably be setting me up with a dietitian when we saw him in March. That's a month away, assuming that I can even see that dietitian on that same day. In all likelihood if I do see one, it would be a meeting, then him or her coming up with a personalized diet plan for me, then another meeting to go over it in a few weeks.....I could doggone starve to death by then!! I can only live off the fat of the land for so long here.

Okay, shoot it down or build it up.....GO!

I say go for it B!

Good morning folks :frow

Go for it blooie, and as always, I love your humor.

Good morning all. I’m up for the day. Son woke me up and went on a fire call. I must have been sleeping hard cuz I didn’t hear his radio go off. It’s -17 with a windchill of -36 right now. 😟
:frow Good morning DMC, have a great day and stay warm
