We couldn't lure the rat to take the bait of the fancy, expensive rat trap we bought so we did resort to poison.

Do you have Ramik there? It isn't a poison but an anticoagulant. I had great success when the rats in the barn got wise to the traps after the first 4 met their end.
"Contains Diphacinone, an extremely effective anticoagulant rodenticide."
